What is a Digivice and how it works across Digimon
A Digivice is the handheld device a Tamer or DigiDestined uses to trigger, track and sometimes store their partner Digimon, and it has been the heart of nearly every Digimon series since 1999. The word blends “digital” and “device,” and each anime reinvents the hardware to match its own evolution rules. We walk through every anime model, the real Bandai toys that inspired them, and the anniversary releases collectors chase today.
What a Digivice actually does
The job of a Digivice changes from series to series, but the core idea never moves. It is the physical link between a human and a Digimon, and when the human’s feelings peak, the device turns that emotion into evolution energy.
In Digimon Adventure (1999), the original Digivice glows and lets a Rookie partner reach Champion. Add a Crest and Tag and the same device pushes the partner to Ultimate. Later series bolt on card readers, spirit scanners, hand-swipe sensors and fusion storage, but every one of those is just a new way of saying “the human and the Digimon are in sync.”
Beyond evolution, most Digivices do three things. They detect other Digimon or DigiDestined within range, they display partner data on a small screen, and in several series they open a gate between the real and Digital Worlds. If you want the deeper theory of why a glowing gadget can change a monster’s form, our piece on digimon evolution covers the digivolution side in full.
The anime devices also borrow their silhouettes from real toys. Bandai sold a virtual pet called Digital Monster two years before the first anime aired, and the Digivice as a concept grew out of that product line. That is why the toy history and the anime history are impossible to separate.
Where the Digivice came from: the 1997 Digital Monster
Before any kid shouted “Digivolve,” Bandai released the Digital Monster virtual pet in Japan in 1997. It was pitched as a rougher, battle-focused answer to Tamagotchi, aimed squarely at boys. You raised a creature from Botamon through Koromon to Agumon, kept it fed and trained, and then connected two units to fight.
That first roster is tiny by today’s standards, but it is the foundation of the whole digimon franchise. Version 1 held Botamon, Koromon, Agumon, Betamon, Greymon, Tyrannomon, Devimon, Meramon, Airdramon, Seadramon, Numemon, MetalGreymon, Mamemon and Monzaemon. Care quality decided whether your Agumon became a Greymon or a sulking Numemon, a mechanic that still shapes the games.
In 1998 Bandai followed up with the Digimon Pendulum. The gimmick was a motion sensor: you shook the unit to train and to launch attacks in battle. Pendulum also introduced the six field families that still organize the Digital World, and the famous Ver. Zero was the first Pendulum with a V-dramon line.
Then came 1999. Digimon Adventure launched on Fuji TV, and Bandai shipped a toy called, simply, Digivice. It was a pedometer. Steps you took in real life moved your partner across the map toward boss battles, which is why the anime kids clip theirs to a belt or pocket.

Digivice (Digimon Adventure, 1999)
The original. All eight DigiDestined receive identical gray devices with a round screen and a strap, dropped on them at summer camp. In the anime it works as a compass, a radar that locks on other Digivices, and the trigger for Rookie to Champion.
The light also has a purifying effect. In the Devimon arc, Tai’s Digivice drives the Black Gear out of Leomon, which is the first hint that the device has a will of its own. When the Tags and Crests enter the story, the Digivice reads the Crest’s glow and pushes the partner to Ultimate. Tai and Matt later Warp Digivolve Agumon and Gabumon straight to Mega with the full power of Courage and Friendship.
Agumon is the partner most people picture when they think of a Digivice, and he was in the toy two years before Tai existed. In the 1999 anime his line runs Koromon, Agumon, Greymon, MetalGreymon and WarGreymon. The virtual pets and games offer dozens of other branches, so always check which medium a chart is quoting.
D-3 (Digimon Adventure 02, 2000)
The D-3 is the first redesign, a squarer unit with an antenna and a colored shell. It is tuned for Armor Digivolution: the user holds a Digi-Egg in the companion D-Terminal, and the D-3 converts it into a new Champion-level form. Davis’s Veemon becomes Flamedramon with the Digi-Egg of Courage and Raidramon with Friendship.
Its second trick is the Digi-Port. Point the D-3 at a computer, say “Digi-Port open,” and the screen becomes a doorway to the Digital World. Later in the series it also enables DNA Digivolution (Jogress), which merges two Champions into one Ultimate, such as ExVeemon and Stingmon into Paildramon.
Ken Ichijouji’s is the odd one out. He started with a standard Digivice that turned black when he became the Digimon Emperor, and it stays dark after his redemption. The 2023 film Digimon Adventure 02: The Beginning revisits the D-3 era with Rui Owada, a newcomer whose history rewrites what we thought we knew about the first DigiDestined.
Veemon (V-mon) only reaches Champion in the 02 anime through the D-3, either as ExVeemon or through an Armor form. That flexibility is the entire design brief for the device.
D-Power (D-Ark, Digimon Tamers, 2001)
Tamers treats the Digital Monster as a real card game inside its own story, so the D-Power is built around a card slot. Takato, Henry and Rika slash cards to give their partners temporary buffs, extra attacks or borrowed equipment, a move the dub calls Digi-Modify and the original calls Card Slash.
Evolution has its own card too. The Blue Card, when slashed, triggers Matrix Digivolution from Champion to Ultimate, which is how Growlmon first becomes WarGrowlmon. For Mega, the device goes further and merges Tamer and Digimon through Biomerge, giving us Gallantmon, MegaGargomon and Sakuyamon.
The D-Power also carries a Digimon analyzer that displays the opponent’s level and attribute, and a compass that swings toward Wild Ones emerging in Shinjuku. Takato’s unit is white with a red ring, Henry’s is green and Rika’s is blue.
Guilmon is a Virus-type Rookie that Takato drew himself, and his D-Power line in the anime is Gigimon, Guilmon, Growlmon, WarGrowlmon and Gallantmon (Dukemon) through Biomerge. The games give him other Champion options, so again, name the medium.
D-Tector (D-Scanner, Digimon Frontier, 2002)
Frontier removes partners altogether. Takuya, Koji and the others receive D-Tectors through their phones, and the device scans Spirits so the kids themselves evolve into Digimon. A Human Spirit gives a form like Agunimon, the matching Beast Spirit gives BurningGreymon, and holding both allows Fusion Evolution into Aldamon.
The D-Tector also reads Fractal Code (Digi-Code in the dub). When an enemy is defeated, the user scans its code to purify it, and whole chunks of the Digital World are restored the same way. Takuya’s device is red and black, Koji’s is blue and white.
Digivice iC and Digivice Burst (Digimon Data Squad, 2006)
Data Squad (Savers) drops buttons for a hand swipe. Marcus Damon punches a Digimon, his DNA Charge (Digisoul) flares, and he swipes that light across the Digivice iC to evolve Agumon into GeoGreymon. DNA Full Charge reaches Ultimate, DNA Charge Overdrive reaches Mega.
Midway through the series the characters upgrade to the Digivice Burst, which is required for Burst Mode, a step above Mega that gives us ShineGreymon Burst Mode. Marcus carries an orange iC, Thomas blue and Yoshi pink.
Fusion Loader (Xros Loader, Digimon Fusion, 2010)
Xros Wars throws out levels entirely, so the Fusion Loader becomes a container rather than a trigger. Mikey Kudo stores an entire army inside his red unit, shouts “Reload” to deploy them, and uses DigiFuse (DigiXros) to combine them into forms like Shoutmon X4.
Christopher Aonuma’s blue Loader and Nene Amano’s lavender one work the same way. In Digimon Xros Wars: The Young Hunters Who Leapt Through Time, the sequel season, Tagiru Akashi’s Loader is also used to hunt and capture wild Digimon, a function the earlier devices never had.
Appli Drive (Digimon Universe: App Monsters, 2016)
Appmon is the furthest the formula has strayed. Haru Shinkai’s Appli Drive takes physical Appmon Chips, performs Appliarise to pull a creature out of the net, and uses Applink to combine two Appmon into a higher grade. It is a Digivice in spirit, and Bandai sold it as one, even though the word never appears.
Digivice: (Digimon Adventure:, 2020)
The 2020 reboot gives the eight kids a slimmer device with a square screen and a colon in its name. On screen it does the same job as the 1999 model, carrying Agumon from Rookie through Champion, Ultimate and Mega, with the main difference being how early WarGreymon appears in the story.
Digivice-V (Digimon Ghost Game, 2021)
Ghost Game’s Digivice-V is the most watch-like model so far, a wrist-worn device closer to a smartwatch or fitness tracker than to anything the earlier kids carried in a pocket. Hiro, Ruli and Kiyoshiro store their partners inside it, project them as holograms, and use it as the evolution trigger. The horror tone of the series means it spends a lot of its screen time scanning for hostile Digimon rather than glowing heroically.
The newest series, digimon beatbreak, arrives with its own device and its own rules, and our dedicated guide to that show tracks how it fits into this lineage. If you would rather see these gadgets in motion than read about them, our digimon hulu streaming breakdown lists where each season is legally available.
Who holds which Digivice: owners and colors
Color is the fastest way to spot a reproduction toy or a mismatched prop, so we keep this table handy. All values come from the anime unless noted.
| Owner | Series | Device | Color |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tai, Matt, Sora, Izzy, Mimi, Joe, T.K., Kari | Digimon Adventure | Digivice | Identical gray and white |
| Davis Motomiya | Digimon Adventure 02 | D-3 | Blue |
| Yolei Inoue | Digimon Adventure 02 | D-3 | Red |
| Cody Hida | Digimon Adventure 02 | D-3 | Yellow |
| T.K. Takaishi | Digimon Adventure 02 | D-3 | Green |
| Kari Kamiya | Digimon Adventure 02 | D-3 | Pink |
| Ken Ichijouji | Digimon Adventure 02 | D-3 | Black |
| Takato Matsuki | Digimon Tamers | D-Power | White, red ring |
| Henry Wong | Digimon Tamers | D-Power | White, green ring |
| Rika Nonaka | Digimon Tamers | D-Power | White, blue ring |
| Takuya Kanbara | Digimon Frontier | D-Tector | Red and black |
| Koji Minamoto | Digimon Frontier | D-Tector | Blue and white |
| Marcus Damon | Digimon Data Squad | Digivice iC | Orange |
| Thomas H. Norstein | Digimon Data Squad | Digivice iC | Blue |
| Yoshi Fujieda | Digimon Data Squad | Digivice iC | Pink |
| Mikey Kudo | Digimon Fusion | Fusion Loader | Red |
| Christopher Aonuma | Digimon Fusion | Fusion Loader | Blue |
| Nene Amano | Digimon Fusion | Fusion Loader | Lavender |
Two owners deserve a note. Meiko Mochizuki, introduced in Digimon Adventure tri. (2015), receives a Digivice of the original Adventure style for Meicoomon. And Ken’s black D-3 is the only case in the franchise of a device changing color to reflect its owner’s heart.
Digivices in manga and novels
The manga went its own way early. Digimon Adventure V-Tamer 01, which started in 1998, gives Taichi Yagami a Digivice shaped like the original Digital Monster pet, complete with the three-button layout. It even keeps the raising mechanics in the story: Zeromaru’s growth tracks what a real player would see on the toy.
Digimon Chronicle, the manga that accompanied the Pendulum X virtual pet in 2003, uses the Pendulum X itself as the characters’ device. That is a pattern worth remembering: when a manga exists mainly to sell a toy, the device in the panels is the toy on the shelf.
The Digimon Xros Wars manga keeps the Xros Loader and even expands what it can do in fights. The Digimon Adventure novels, meanwhile, retell the 1999 series and treat the Digivice exactly as the anime does, so there is no separate canon to learn there.
Digivices in the video games
Game Digivices are usually menus wearing a costume, and that is fine, because the menu is where evolution requirements live.
In Digimon World (PlayStation, 1999 in Japan, 2000 in the West), the Digivice is the pause screen. It shows your partner’s HP, MP, weight, care mistakes and remaining lifespan, and every evolution in that game depends on those numbers rather than a glowing moment. Learning to read the Digivice is the first thing the game teaches you in File City.
Digimon Masters Online, the long-running PC MMO, treats the Digivice as your Digimon inventory. Each slot holds a partner, and upgrading the device is how you carry more of them. Digimon World Data Squad on PlayStation 2 recreates the Digivice iC and the DNA Charge system from the anime.
The Digimon Story line, including the 2025 release Digimon Story: Time Stranger, handles evolution through lab menus with level and stat gates rather than a handheld device in the hero’s pocket. If you are planning a party for that game, our time stranger digimon roster is the place to check which forms are available.
Digivice toys: from pedometers to color screens
Here is where the hobby gets expensive. Bandai has sold a toy for nearly every anime device, then revisited the best ones with anniversary editions that upgrade the internals while keeping the shell.
The 1999 to 2002 originals
The first Digivice toy (1999) is a pedometer. Steps you walk in real life move the partner through areas on the screen, and when you arrive at a boss the unit beeps for a battle. It was never a care-heavy pet like Digital Monster; it was closer to a step counter with a prize at the end.
The D-3 (2000) added Armor evolution and linked to a separate D-Terminal toy so Digi-Eggs could be loaded. The D-Ark (2001, sold as D-Power in the West) brought the card slash to life with physical cards you swipe through a reader on the side. The D-Scanner (2002, D-Tector in the West) had you scan Spirits and run Spirit Evolution yourself.
Anniversary and re-release editions
The anniversary line is where modern collectors spend most of their time. These units keep the vintage look while adding much larger rosters, better screens and, lately, color.
| Toy | Japan release | Anniversary | Headline feature |
|---|---|---|---|
| Digivice Ver. 15th | 2015 | Adventure 15th | Original shell, expanded roster, color variants |
| Digital Monster Ver. 20th | 2017 | Digital Monster 20th | Raise two Digimon at once, bigger roster |
| D-Ark Ver. 15th | 2017 | Tamers 15th | Card slash with a new card set |
| Digimon Pendulum Ver. 20th | 2018 | Pendulum 20th | Six families, two-Digimon raising |
| Digital Monster X | 2019 | X-Antibody line | X-Antibody evolutions |
| Digivice Ver. Complete | 2020 | Adventure 20th | All eight partners and Adventure 02 content |
| Vital Bracelet Digital Monster | 2021 | New line | Wearable with heart-rate sensor, Dim cards |
| Vital Bracelet BE | 2022 | New line | Larger display, app sync |
| Digimon Color | 2023 | Digital Monster series | Original pets with a color LCD |
| Digimon Pendulum Color | 2024 | Pendulum series | Pendulum shells with a color LCD |
| Digivice 25th Color Evolution | 2024 | Adventure 25th | Original Digivice shell with color animation |
Digivice Ver. Complete is the one we recommend if you only buy one Adventure-style unit. It packs the eight original partners, their full anime lines and extra content from Adventure 02, and it runs on the familiar pedometer loop. The Ver. 15th is cheaper secondhand but has a smaller roster.
Tamer tip
Bandai sells most anniversary Digivices through Premium Bandai preorder windows that close months before shipping. Order in the window or expect to pay a markup on the secondary market, because reprints are rare and often change the color scheme.
Vital Bracelet: the Digivice you wear
The Vital Bracelet (2021) is the biggest change to the format since the Pendulum. It straps to your wrist, counts steps and reads your heart rate, and converts both into Vital Values that feed your partner. Digimon live on swappable Dim cards, each with its own evolution tree, so a single bracelet can host Agumon, Guilmon or a Ghost Game line depending on the card you insert.
Vital Bracelet BE (2022) improved the display and the app connection. Separately, Bandai America released a localized version of the original Vital Bracelet called Vital Hero for Western markets in July 2022. If the pedometer Digivice of 1999 was the prototype, this is the fully realized idea.
How to raise and evolve a partner on the Vital Bracelet
- Insert a Dim card and let the Digi-Egg hatch into its In-Training form.
- Wear the bracelet daily so steps and heart rate build Vital Values.
- Train and battle through the menu to earn wins toward the next form.
- Wait for the evolution timer; the form you get depends on the Vital Values and wins you banked.
- Swap Dim cards to move the partner into a different evolution tree.
The exact thresholds per form vary by Dim card and are printed in each card’s companion material, so we do not quote single numbers here. The habit that matters is consistency: a bracelet left in a drawer evolves into the weakest branch.
Digivice 25th Color Evolution
Released for Digimon Adventure’s 25th anniversary in 2024, the Digivice 25th Color Evolution is the first Adventure-style Digivice with a color screen. The shell is the classic rounded case from 1999, the logo and button layout match the original, and the partner evolution plays as animated color sequences rather than the old monochrome flashes.
It keeps the walking mechanic, so this is still a device that wants to leave the house with you. For collectors who grew up on the gray toy, this is the version to display, and for new players the color screen makes the care loop far easier to read at a glance.
Tamer tip
Keep the original box and the plastic case insert for any anniversary Digivice. Completeness drives resale value more than condition, and loose units without the strap or instruction card routinely sell for a fraction of a boxed one.
Digivices in the card game
The Digimon Card Game (2020 onward) does not use a Digivice as a card type, but the device is everywhere in the art. Tamer cards show Tai, Davis, Takato and the rest holding their series-correct devices, and some Option cards depict the moment a Digivice activates. If you are moving from toys to cardboard, our digimon tcg primer explains how Tamer cards and digivolution costs replicate the anime’s rules on the table.
The older Bandai card lines are more direct. The Digimon Tamers era cards were designed to be slashed through the D-Ark toy, so a 2001 card is a game piece and a toy accessory at the same time.
What to check before you buy a Digivice toy
Fakes and swaps are common in this corner of the digimon toy market, so inspect four things.
Check the logo and the back plate first. Japanese units carry the Bandai logo and Japanese text, while Bandai America versions carry English text and sometimes different button labels. Neither is wrong, but they are priced differently and a mismatch between box and unit is a red flag.
Check the display. Vintage monochrome LCDs develop dead segments and bleeding, and a pedometer Digivice with a flaky screen cannot be repaired cheaply. Color models should show no stuck pixels on the boot screen.
Check the case and battery contacts. Corroded contacts from an old button cell are the most common reason a secondhand Digivice will not boot. Open the battery door before paying.
Finally, know who you are buying from. Bandai Namco remains the digimon franchise owner, and official releases come through Bandai, Bandai America or Premium Bandai. Anything branded differently is a reproduction, and reproductions almost never include the full roster.
FAQ
What is the difference between a Digivice and a Digimon virtual pet?
A virtual pet, like the 1997 Digital Monster, is about care: feeding, cleaning and training decide what your Digimon becomes. A Digivice toy, starting in 1999, is about the anime loop of walking, battling and evolving a fixed partner. Modern releases like Vital Bracelet blend the two.
Which Digivice is best for a new player?
Digivice Ver. Complete for an Adventure fan, Vital Bracelet BE for someone who wants a daily wearable. Both are Japanese releases, so expect Japanese menus, though the icons are simple enough to learn in an afternoon.
Why do the Digivice names differ between English and Japanese?
The English dubs renamed several devices for trademark and marketing reasons. The D-Ark became the D-Power, the D-Scanner became the D-Tector and the Xros Loader became the Fusion Loader. Digivice, D-3, Digivice iC and Digivice-V kept their names.
Can a Digivice reach Mega in the original anime?
Yes, in Digimon Adventure. Tai and Matt’s Digivices combine with the Crests of Courage and Friendship to Warp Digivolve Agumon and Gabumon to WarGreymon and MetalGarurumon. In Tamers, Mega requires Biomerge through the D-Power instead.
Does the Digivice 25th Color Evolution work with older Digivices?
It is a standalone unit built around the Adventure cast with color animation, and it is not designed to link with the 1999 pedometer model. Treat it as a modern replacement for the original rather than an accessory to it.
