Angemon

Angemon is the Champion-level Angel Digimon that Patamon digivolves into, a Vaccine attribute holy warrior with six wings, a blue cloth over his helmet, and the Hand of Fate attack that ended Devimon in the original anime. He debuted on the Digital Monster Ver. 2 virtual pet in 1997, became T.K.’s partner form in Digimon Adventure (1999), and has been a core pickup in every Digimon Story game up to Time Stranger (2025). This profile covers who he is, his evolution lines per medium, his attacks, every major appearance and the trivia you can use to win arguments.
Who is Angemon

Angemon is the holy counterpart to Devimon in the earliest days of the franchise. Devimon arrived on the Ver. 1 virtual pet in 1997 and Angemon followed on Ver. 2 the same year, and the anime turned that pairing into one of its most memorable showdowns. His official profile describes a messenger of light with six shining wings, clad in white cloth and a Holy Ring, who is said to bring happiness to the Digital World and annihilate evil when it awakens. The helmet covering his eyes, the long blond hair and the staff are all part of a design that reads as “angel” instantly, even to people who have never watched a single episode.
In the Japanese material he is Angemon too, so there is no name change to learn here, unlike his Ultimate form MagnaAngemon, who is HolyAngemon in Japan. His level is Champion (Adult in Japanese terms), his attribute is Vaccine, and his type is Angel. What makes Angemon special in the fandom is not raw power but timing: in Digimon Adventure he is the Digimon who takes the longest to show up, and when he finally does, he wins the fight and dies for it in the same episode.
Evolution line
Angemon’s line is one of the few in the franchise that stays consistent across almost everything. Patamon becomes Angemon, Angemon becomes MagnaAngemon, and MagnaAngemon becomes Seraphimon. The details around that spine are where each medium goes its own way, so here they are one at a time.
Anime (Digimon Adventure, 02, tri., reboot)
In Digimon Adventure, the line runs Poyomon (Fresh) to Tokomon (In-Training) to Patamon (Rookie) to Angemon (Champion) to MagnaAngemon (Ultimate). Angemon first appears in episode 13 when T.K. and Patamon are cornered by Devimon on File Island. MagnaAngemon debuts late in the Dark Masters arc against Piedmon (Piemon), and T.K.’s partner finally reached Seraphimon on screen in the Digimon Adventure tri. films.
Digimon Adventure 02 adds two branches. With the Digi-Egg of Hope, Patamon Armor Digivolves into Pegasusmon (Pegasmon). Once regular digivolution returns after the Digimon Emperor arc, Angemon DNA Digivolves with Cody’s Ankylomon into the Ultimate-level Shakkoumon. The 2020 reboot of Digimon Adventure keeps the standard Patamon to Angemon to MagnaAngemon to Seraphimon route.
| From | To | Series | How it happens |
|---|---|---|---|
| Patamon | Angemon | Digimon Adventure (1999) | Standard digivolution, first seen in episode 13 vs Devimon |
| Angemon | MagnaAngemon (HolyAngemon) | Digimon Adventure (1999) | Standard digivolution, Dark Masters arc vs Piedmon |
| Patamon | Pegasusmon (Pegasmon) | Digimon Adventure 02 (2000) | Armor Digivolution with the Digi-Egg of Hope |
| Angemon + Ankylomon | Shakkoumon | Digimon Adventure 02 (2000) | DNA (Jogress) Digivolution with Cody’s partner |
| MagnaAngemon | Seraphimon | Digimon Adventure tri. (2015-2018) | Mega form, shown in the film series |
| Patamon | Angemon | Digimon Adventure: (2020) | Standard digivolution in the reboot |
One anime-only wrinkle worth knowing: after Angemon uses all of his energy to destroy Devimon in episode 13, he reverts to a Digi-Egg and hatches as Poyomon. That means T.K. restarts from the Fresh level while every other kid already has a Champion, which is why Patamon spends so much of the middle of the series unable to digivolve.
Digimon Story games (Cyber Sleuth, Hacker’s Memory, Time Stranger)
The Digimon Story games treat Angemon as an early Champion you can reach quickly from Patamon. In Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth (2016 in the West), Hacker’s Memory (2018) and Digimon Story: Time Stranger (2025), digivolution works the same way: your Digimon has to hit a level threshold and meet specific stat requirements listed on the Digivolution screen, and a few forms also check personality or require an item. Angemon sits on the standard Patamon route in all three, and from there the natural path is MagnaAngemon, then Seraphimon at Mega.
| Game | From | To | What the game checks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth (2016) | Patamon | Angemon | Level and stat thresholds shown in the Digivolution menu |
| Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth (2016) | Angemon | MagnaAngemon | Level and stat thresholds shown in the Digivolution menu |
| Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth – Hacker’s Memory (2018) | Patamon | Angemon | Same system as Cyber Sleuth |
| Digimon Story: Time Stranger (2025) | Patamon | Angemon | Level and stat thresholds, viewable in the Digivolution menu |
| Digimon Story: Time Stranger (2025) | Angemon | MagnaAngemon | Level and stat thresholds, viewable in the Digivolution menu |
| Digimon Story: Time Stranger (2025) | MagnaAngemon | Seraphimon | Mega-tier level and stat thresholds |
I am deliberately not printing exact level and stat numbers here. Those values differ between Cyber Sleuth and Time Stranger, and the in-game Digivolution screen shows you the live requirements with a checkmark next to each one you have met. Trust that screen over any guide.
How to get Angemon in Digimon Story: Time Stranger
- Scan wild Patamon during battles until the scan percentage reaches 100% or higher.
- Convert the scanned data to add Patamon to your party.
- Level Patamon up and train the stats listed on the Digivolution screen.
- Open the Digivolution menu, pick Angemon, and confirm.
- Keep going to MagnaAngemon and then Seraphimon once the higher thresholds turn green.
Two system notes for Time Stranger specifically. First, Angemon is a Vaccine Digimon, and the attribute triangle in every Digimon Story game has Vaccine beating Virus, Virus beating Data and Data beating Vaccine. Second, Angel types carry the Light element, and Light and Dark hit each other hard, so Angemon is a natural answer to the Devimon-style Virus and Dark enemies you meet early. He is in the base roster, so you do not need any time stranger dlc content to raise him.
Tamer tip
Scanning a Digimon past 100% in the Digimon Story games gives the converted Digimon a stat bonus, and 200% gives a bigger one. If you are fighting Patamon anyway, let the scan climb before you convert so your future Angemon starts ahead of the thresholds it needs for MagnaAngemon.
Digimon Card Game (Bandai, 2020 onward)
In the current Digimon Card Game, Angemon is a yellow Level 4 card. Level numbers here are the card game’s own system (Rookie is Level 3, Champion is Level 4, Ultimate is Level 5, Mega is Level 6), so do not confuse them with anime levels. The yellow starter deck ST-3 “Heaven’s Yellow” is built around exactly this line, with Patamon-style Rookies feeding into Angemon and up through MagnaAngemon to Seraphimon.
| Card level | Typical form on the line | Card colour |
|---|---|---|
| Level 3 (Rookie) | Patamon | Yellow |
| Level 4 (Champion) | Angemon | Yellow |
| Level 5 (Ultimate) | MagnaAngemon | Yellow |
| Level 6 (Mega) | Seraphimon | Yellow |
Angemon has been reprinted across several booster sets since ST-3, and the specific card numbers, DP values and effects vary from print to print. Check the exact card ID on the one in your hand before building a list around it; the yellow “recovery” and security-stacking strategy that Angemon lines usually support is the common thread.
Signature attacks
Angemon’s moveset is short and iconic, which is part of why he is so easy to remember.
| Attack (English) | Japanese name | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Hand of Fate | Heaven’s Knuckle | Charges his fist with holy light and fires it as a beam or punch; the finisher that destroyed Devimon in Adventure episode 13 |
| Angel Rod | Angel Rod | Strikes with his staff, used as a melee attack in the anime and games |
| Omni Typhoon | (English releases) | A wind attack that shows up in some English game materials rather than the anime |
Hand of Fate is the one everyone knows. In Digimon Adventure it is framed as a purifying blow, the holy fist that can turn back a dark Digimon rather than simply knocking it out, which is exactly why it costs Angemon everything against Devimon. In the Digimon Story games it appears as a Light-element skill on his learnable move list, so you will be spamming it against Virus and Dark types well before you get to MagnaAngemon.
Appearances
Anime series and movies
Angemon belongs to the Adventure continuity and almost never leaves it. His anime record looks like this:
| Series or film | Year | Angemon’s role |
|---|---|---|
| Digimon Adventure | 1999 | T.K.’s partner’s Champion form; debuts episode 13 vs Devimon, later digivolves to MagnaAngemon vs Piedmon |
| Digimon Adventure 02 | 2000 | Returns once normal digivolution is restored; DNA Digivolves with Ankylomon into Shakkoumon |
| Digimon Adventure 02: Hurricane Touchdown (part of Digimon: The Movie) | 2000 | Fights alongside Angewomon in the Colorado segment |
| Digimon Adventure tri. | 2015-2018 | Appears throughout; the line reaches Seraphimon on screen |
| Digimon Adventure: Last Evolution Kizuna | 2020 | Appears with the grown-up DigiDestined |
| Digimon Adventure: (reboot) | 2020 | New continuity with the same Patamon to Angemon to MagnaAngemon to Seraphimon route |
Episode 13 of Digimon Adventure is the single most important Angemon moment in the franchise. The whole File Island arc builds to it: every other partner has digivolved, Patamon has been the odd one out for a dozen episodes, and Devimon has just broken the island into pieces. Angemon appears, declares that he was born to defeat Devimon, and burns himself out doing it. The rebirth as Poyomon is also the first time the show tells kids that a Digimon’s death is not permanent, which sets up the rules for the rest of the series.
In 02 his job changes. Patamon spends the first half of the series Armor Digivolving into Pegasusmon because the Digimon Emperor’s Dark Towers block normal digivolution. Once Angemon is back, he becomes half of Shakkoumon, the giant clay-statue Ultimate he forms with Cody’s Ankylomon. Shakkoumon’s debut is the last of the three DNA Digivolutions in 02 to arrive, and it gives T.K. the Ultimate level he never quite got on his own in that series.
If you want to rewatch the Devimon fight, Digimon Adventure is widely available through streaming services; our digimon hulu guide runs through the current options region by region.

The virtual pet credit matters more than it looks. Angemon was designed for a 1997 toy, two years before Digimon Adventure aired, which is why his original profile talks about him as a pre-existing legend rather than as T.K.’s partner. The anime inherited the design and gave it a personality. Collectors chasing those original Ver. 2 units should read our digimon toy piece, because the pets have become one of the pricier corners of the hobby.
Digimon Story: Time Stranger, released on October 3, 2025, is the current home for Angemon. It is a full Digimon Story RPG with a roster of more than 450 Digimon, the familiar scan-and-convert system from Cyber Sleuth, and a story split between Tokyo and the Digital World. Angemon is not a story partner there; he is one of hundreds of forms you build toward yourself. The full time stranger digimon roster is worth skimming if you want to plan a yellow-themed team of angels before you start.
Card game sets
Angemon has been part of every generation of the Digimon trading card game. He appeared in the Japanese Hyper Colosseum game and the English Digi-Battle Card Game around 1999-2000, and in the current Digimon Card Game he is a yellow Level 4 that first arrived in the ST-3 Heaven’s Yellow starter deck. Yellow is the “holy” colour in the modern game, and the Angemon line is its flagship, which is why nearly every yellow starter product since has included some version of him.
Trivia
- Angemon has six wings. The line adds two with each level: MagnaAngemon has eight and Seraphimon has ten. Angewomon, Gatomon’s (Tailmon’s) Ultimate-level (Perfect-level) form, also has eight, matching MagnaAngemon, which is why she sits a level above Angemon rather than beside him.
- Angemon and Devimon were designed as a matched pair for the 1997 virtual pets, Devimon on Ver. 1 and Angemon on Ver. 2. Devimon is a fallen angel in his official profile, so the episode 13 fight is literally angel versus fallen angel.
- The episode 13 sacrifice was the first partner Digimon death in the anime. Writers used it to establish that Digimon reincarnate as eggs, a rule Digimon Adventure then applied to Wizardmon’s much more permanent-feeling death later on.
- In the English dub, Angemon and MagnaAngemon are voiced by Dave Mallow, who gave the character the calm, slightly formal delivery that fans still quote.
- His Holy Ring is the same kind of relic Gatomon wears on her tail. In Adventure it is just part of the design; later franchise lore treats Holy Rings as artefacts that stabilise holy Digimon.
- Angemon’s helmet fully covers his eyes. MagnaAngemon keeps the helmet, Seraphimon seals the whole head inside armour, so you never see this line’s eyes at any level above Rookie.
- Patamon’s evolution sequence in Adventure runs to “brave heart,” the insert song used for every digivolution in that series, rather than to the butter-fly song that opens each episode. If you only remember Angemon rising out of the light with a choir behind him, that is your memory blending the two.
- The Digivice in Adventure is what triggers Patamon’s digivolution, and episode 13 is the clearest demonstration of how a digivice works in that continuity: T.K.’s device only reacts once he stops wanting to run.
FAQ
What level is Angemon?
Angemon is a Champion, the third stage after In-Training and Rookie. In Japanese materials the same level is called Adult. His attribute is Vaccine and his type is Angel in the anime, the Digimon Story games and the card game alike, though the card game uses its own Level 4 numbering for Champions.
What does Angemon digivolve into?
In Digimon Adventure and the Digimon Story games, Angemon digivolves into MagnaAngemon (HolyAngemon), who then becomes Seraphimon. In Digimon Adventure 02 he also DNA Digivolves with Ankylomon into Shakkoumon. Those are the only destinations confirmed across anime and the main Story games; other games add their own branches.
How do you get Angemon in Digimon Story: Time Stranger?
Scan and convert a Patamon, level it up, meet the stat thresholds shown on the Digivolution screen, then choose Angemon. The exact numbers are displayed in game and differ from Cyber Sleuth, so use the menu rather than a memorised value. From Angemon you can continue to MagnaAngemon and Seraphimon in the same way.
What is Angemon’s signature attack?
Hand of Fate, called Heaven’s Knuckle in Japan. He charges his fist with holy light and fires it, and it is the move that destroys Devimon in Digimon Adventure episode 13. His secondary attack is Angel Rod, a strike with his staff.
Which episode does Angemon first appear in?
Digimon Adventure episode 13, when Devimon attacks T.K. and Patamon on File Island. Angemon wins the fight, reverts to a Digi-Egg and hatches as Poyomon, and does not reappear in Champion form until much later in the series.
Is Angemon stronger than Angewomon?
They are not the same level. Angewomon is Gatomon’s Ultimate form, one stage above Angemon’s Champion level, and her extra wings reflect that gap. In the Digimon Story games Angewomon sits at Ultimate with the Vaccine attribute while Angemon sits at Champion, so she outranks him by level.
