Angewomon

Angewomon Digimon file

Angewomon is the Ultimate-level, Vaccine-attribute Archangel Digimon who evolves from Gatomon (Tailmon), best known as Kari Kamiya’s partner in Digimon Adventure (1999). This profile covers her evolution line across the anime, the Digimon Story games including Time Stranger, and the card game, plus her attacks, her X-Antibody form and every appearance worth knowing. All facts name the medium they come from, because her lines genuinely change from screen to game to cardboard.

Who is Angewomon

Angewomon is the “angel woman” of the franchise, and the name is exactly that: the French word ange plus woman. She is an Archangel Digimon with eight wings, a visored helmet that hides her eyes, long blonde hair and a pink sash, and she carries herself like a goddess of mercy. The Digimon Reference Book gives her a gentle heart toward the good and a ruthless streak toward evil, which is why she looks serene right up until the moment she puts a holy arrow through something.

Most of you met her in episode 37 of Digimon Adventure, “Wizardmon’s Gift”, when Kari’s grief over Wizardmon lit up the Crest of Light and Gatomon reached Ultimate for the first time. From that moment she became the series’ premier holy attacker, the one who finished Myotismon (Vamdemon) and later out-fought LadyDevimon in the famous episode 51 brawl. She is also one of the very few Digimon the franchise explicitly codes as female, which is why “angemon female” is such a common search for her.

Evolution line

Angewomon’s line is one of the most stable in the whole franchise at the Champion and Ultimate steps. The Mega step is where it gets interesting, because each medium picks a different final form. Treat the tables below as separate maps rather than one combined “digimon evolution chart“, because mixing them up is how fans end up arguing about things that are true in one game and false in another.

Anime (Digimon Adventure continuity)

Stage Digimon Where it is shown
Fresh YukimiBotamon Digimon Adventure 02 (flashback material and later media)
In-Training Nyaromon Digimon Adventure 02
Rookie Salamon (Plotmon) Digimon Adventure, Myotismon arc flashback
Champion Gatomon (Tailmon) Digimon Adventure, from episode 21 onward
Ultimate Angewomon Digimon Adventure, episode 37 onward
Mega Magnadramon (Holydramon) Digimon Adventure 02: Hurricane Touchdown movie (2000), via Warp Digivolution from Gatomon
Mega Ophanimon Falldown Mode Digimon Adventure tri. Part 5, Coexistence (2017), via Warp Digivolution from Gatomon
Mega Ophanimon Digimon Adventure: (2020 reboot), evolving directly from Angewomon

Two things stand out here. In the original Adventure, Gatomon is already a Champion, which is why Kari’s Ultimate is Angewomon rather than a Champion-level cat. And in the original continuity, Angewomon herself never digivolves on screen into a Mega: both Magnadramon and Ophanimon Falldown Mode come straight from Gatomon by Warp Digivolution. The 2020 reboot is the first Adventure series to actually show Angewomon stepping up to Ophanimon.

Digimon Story games

Game Evolves from Evolves to Conditions
Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth / Hacker’s Memory Gatomon (Tailmon) Ophanimon, Magnadramon (Holydramon), Mastemon (DNA with LadyDevimon) Ultimate-tier level and stat checks shown on Gatomon’s Digivolution screen; Mastemon needs both Angewomon and LadyDevimon ready to DNA Digivolve
Digimon Story Time Stranger Gatomon (Tailmon) Ophanimon, Magnadramon (Holydramon) Ultimate-tier level, stat and personality checks shown on the in-game evolution screen

In both Cyber Sleuth games Angewomon carries the Light element, which puts her in direct opposition to Dark-element Digimon like LadyDevimon and Myotismon, and that mirror matchup carries into Time Stranger. The Mastemon fusion is the showpiece of her Cyber Sleuth line: you need an Angewomon and a LadyDevimon sitting in your party at the same time and you DNA Digivolve them into a Mega that mixes both.

Time Stranger also lists Angewomon X-Antibody as her own entry, separate from the standard Angewomon, so if you are building a holy team in that game you have two Ultimate-level Angewomon bodies to choose from. More on her X form further down.

How to get Angewomon in Digimon Story Time Stranger

  1. Scan and convert a Salamon (Plotmon) or Gatomon (Tailmon) from the field.
  2. Raise Gatomon until the evolution screen flags Angewomon as available.
  3. Clear every requirement shown on that screen, including level, stats and personality.
  4. Confirm the evolution and check Angewomon’s own screen for Ophanimon and Magnadramon.

Tamer tip

In the Cyber Sleuth games, de-digivolving Angewomon back to Gatomon and re-evolving her raises ABI, and higher ABI is what unlocks the stricter Mega requirements for Ophanimon and Magnadramon. Yo-yo her a couple of times before you commit to a Mega.

Digimon Card Game

Card game Angewomon’s level Evolves from Evolves to
Digimon Card Game (2020 onward) Level 5, Yellow Level 4 Yellow Digimon, typically Gatomon Level 6 Yellow Megas such as Ophanimon and Magnadramon, plus Mastemon in the ST10 Parallel World Tactician starter deck
Digimon Digital Card Battle (PS1, 1999 JP) Ultimate card Gatomon line Mega cards of the holy family

The ST10 starter, Parallel World Tactician, is the one every Angewomon fan should know. It is built around the Angewomon and LadyDevimon pairing that feeds into Mastemon, which is the card game’s take on the same fusion Cyber Sleuth introduced. If you have never touched the “digimon tcg” before, that deck is one of the easier yellow entry points because the evolution tree reads exactly like the anime line you already know.

Signature attacks

Her attack names are a classic example of the dub and the original drifting apart, so here is the full set with the medium each name comes from.

English name Japanese name What it does Where it appears
Celestial Arrow Holy Arrow Fires an arrow of pure light from a bow formed by her own body and wings Digimon Adventure (1999), every Digimon World and Digimon Story game, the card game
Heaven’s Charm Heaven’s Charm Projects a cross-shaped aura of holy light that strips evil Digimon of their fighting power, and can gather allies’ energy into one strike Digimon Adventure (1999), Digimon World games, Digimon Story games
Heaven’s Charge Heaven’s Charm (dub rename) The English dub’s alternate name for the same light-gathering attack Digimon Adventure 02 English dub

The Celestial Arrow is the one that matters. In Adventure episode 37 she used Heaven’s Charm to paralyze Myotismon, then used a separate ability, Saint Air, to absorb the combined attacks of the other Digimon and channeled that power into a single Celestial Arrow that finished him off. In the games, Holy Arrow is almost always a single-target Light special, which makes her the designated Dark-killer on any team that can field her.

How strong is Angewomon really?

The honest answer is “stronger than the level says, situationally”. Within Digimon Adventure she carries the best Ultimate-level record of the original eight partners. She defeated Myotismon in her debut episode, held her own in the VenomMyotismon fight that followed, and beat LadyDevimon, a fellow Ultimate, in episode 51 without needing a Mega. That is a serious résumé for a Digimon who was only just born in the show’s second half.

The limit shows up against Mega-level opponents. Against the Dark Masters she was outclassed by Piedmon, who turned her into a keychain along with most of the cast in episode 52, “Piedmon’s Last Jest”. The lesson Adventure teaches is consistent: Angewomon dominates anything up to her own level and anything with a Dark alignment, and she needs backup once Megas enter the room.

In the games she keeps that identity. Her Light-element Holy Arrow in Cyber Sleuth and Time Stranger is the natural answer to Virus-attribute, Dark-element bosses, and her Vaccine attribute gives her the triangle advantage over Virus types on top of that. She is not a wall and she is not a healer, so build around her as a precision striker, which is exactly what she is on screen.

Angewomon X (Angewomon X-Antibody)

Angewomon X is a separate Digimon rather than an alternate costume. She is an Angewomon whose data absorbed the X-Antibody, keeping the Ultimate level and Vaccine attribute while gaining a heavier, more elaborate set of holy armor and a reworked silhouette. She came out of Bandai’s X-Antibody expansion era, the same project that gave us Agumon X, WarGreymon X and the rest of the X roster.

For most of you the practical point is Time Stranger, where Angewomon X-Antibody has her own roster slot alongside the standard Angewomon. If you are hunting “angewomon x” as a search term, that is why she pops up next to the game. Her X form shares the holy, Dark-hunting role of the original, so treat her as a sidegrade rather than an upgrade: pick the one whose evolution requirements and move list fit the team you are building, and read both off the in-game screen rather than trusting a years-old wiki table.

That is a near-unbroken run from the first PS1 era through to the “digimon story time stranger” roster, which tells you how central she is to Bandai’s holy lineup. Only the very first Digimon World skips her; Angemon made that cut and she did not.

Card game sets

In the modern Digimon Card Game she is a yellow Level 5 who slots between Gatomon at Level 4 and the yellow Megas at Level 6. Her most important printing for new players is in ST10 Parallel World Tactician, the Mastemon starter, where she and LadyDevimon are the two Ultimates the deck is built to evolve. She also received printings in the older Japanese Hyper Colosseum game and the English Digi-Battle card game that ran alongside the original anime.

Virtual pets and toys

She joined Bandai’s Digimon Pendulum virtual pets in the same 1999 era as her anime debut, which is where her family tags Virus Busters, Nature Spirits and Wind Guardians come from. Figures of her have been a staple of every “digimon toy” wave since, from the 2000 action figure line through to the modern Figure-rise Standard model kits, and the Angewomon kit is one of the more sought-after in that range because of the eight-wing assembly.

Trivia

  • The line in the Digimon Reference Book about being gentle toward the good and ruthless toward evil is why Japanese fans tend to describe her as a goddess of war in angel’s clothing rather than a healer.
  • Angewomon has eight wings. Angemon has six, and Ophanimon and Seraphimon each have ten, so the wing count literally tracks the holy hierarchy.
  • She is not Angemon’s “female version” in any official sense. Angemon is a Champion and his Ultimate is MagnaAngemon (HolyAngemon); Angewomon is an Ultimate in a separate line that starts with Salamon.
  • Her English dub voice in Digimon Adventure was Edie Mirman, and her Japanese voice, shared with Gatomon, was Yuka Tokumitsu.
  • The Hurricane Touchdown scene where Magnadramon and Seraphimon release the Golden Digi-Eggs was trimmed from the American compilation film Digimon: The Movie, which is why many English-speaking fans grew up not knowing Kari had a Mega at all.
  • LadyDevimon, her Virus-attribute dark mirror, debuted in Adventure episode 51 purely to fight her, and the pair have been paired up in merchandise, the card game and the Mastemon fusion ever since.
  • In Cyber Sleuth, Mastemon is the only Mega in the game that needs both an angel and a fallen angel as DNA material, which makes Angewomon the rare Digimon whose best evolution requires raising her own opposite.
  • Every Digivice toy that includes the Light line puts Angewomon in Gatomon’s Ultimate slot, so if you ever wondered how a “digivice works” when the kids called on her in Adventure, the toy is the closest thing to the on-screen logic.

FAQ

What level is Angewomon?

Angewomon is an Ultimate-level Digimon in English terminology, which the Japanese materials call Perfect. In the Digimon Card Game she is a Level 5, which is the card equivalent of Ultimate.

What does Angewomon digivolve into?

It depends on the medium. In the original Digimon Adventure she never digivolves on screen, and Gatomon Warp Digivolves to Magnadramon in the Hurricane Touchdown movie and to Ophanimon Falldown Mode in tri. In the 2020 reboot Angewomon evolves into Ophanimon. In Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth she can become Ophanimon, Magnadramon or Mastemon through DNA Digivolution with LadyDevimon, and Time Stranger offers Ophanimon and Magnadramon.

Is Angewomon the female Angemon?

No. Angemon is Patamon’s Champion and his Ultimate is MagnaAngemon. Angewomon is Gatomon’s Ultimate, one full level above Angemon, and she belongs to a separate line that begins with Salamon. They are both Archangel-type Vaccine Digimon, which is where the confusion comes from.

What is Angewomon’s attack called?

Her main attack is Celestial Arrow, known as Holy Arrow in Japan. Her secondary attack is Heaven’s Charm, which the English dub of Adventure 02 also called Heaven’s Charge.

Is Angewomon in Digimon Story Time Stranger?

Yes. Time Stranger includes the standard Angewomon as an Ultimate-level Vaccine Digimon evolving from Gatomon, and it also includes Angewomon X-Antibody as her own entry. Check the in-game evolution screen for the exact level, stat and personality requirements, because those are the numbers the game actually enforces.

Who is Angewomon’s dark counterpart?

LadyDevimon, an Ultimate-level Virus Digimon who debuted in Digimon Adventure episode 51 specifically to fight her. In the Cyber Sleuth games and the ST10 card game starter the two combine into Mastemon.
