Agumon

Agumon is the Rookie-level Reptile Digimon that started it all: a stubby orange dinosaur with a Vaccine attribute, a mouthful of Pepper Breath and a straight line to Greymon. He was one of the first Child forms on Bandai’s 1997 Digital Monster virtual pet before Tai Kamiya made him the face of Digimon Adventure in 1999. This profile breaks down who Agumon is, his evolution lines in the anime, the Digimon Story games and the card game, his attacks, every major appearance and the Bond of Bravery form from Last Evolution Kizuna.
Who is Agumon

Agumon is a small dinosaur Digimon that has grown enough to walk on two legs, with big, sharp claws on its hands and feet. Bandai’s official Digimon Reference Book describes him as a Reptile type that is still mid-growth, yet already powerful enough that those claws can do real damage. His special move is Pepper Breath, known in Japan as Baby Flame, a burst of burning flames spat from his mouth. Short arms, a big head, a thick tail and a permanent toothy grin: that silhouette has barely changed in nearly three decades.
If you came to Digimon through the anime, you know Agumon as Tai’s partner, the Digimon of Courage. He is brave to the point of being reckless, loves food more than almost anything, and follows Tai into every fight without a second thought. The Data Squad version (Masaru Daimon’s “Aniki”-shouting Agumon with the red leather straps) is a separate design listed in the Reference Book as Agumon (2006 anime), and the Adventure: (2020) reboot gave the classic design a new, louder personality. Across all of them, the core stays the same: a little guy with great potential who turns into something terrifying when his Tamer needs him.
Evolution line
This is where media matter. The anime, each game and the card game give Agumon different routes, and mixing them up is the fastest way to lose an argument with another Tamer. Every table below names its source.
Anime
The Digimon Adventure line is the one burned into everyone’s memory. Each step is tied to a specific episode or film.
| Stage | From | To | Where it happens |
|---|---|---|---|
| In-Training to Rookie | Koromon | Agumon | Digimon Adventure episode 1 (1999) |
| Rookie to Champion | Agumon | Greymon | Digimon Adventure episode 2, against Shellmon |
| Champion to Ultimate (dark) | Greymon | SkullGreymon | Digimon Adventure episode 16, when Tai forces the evolution |
| Champion to Ultimate | Greymon | MetalGreymon | Digimon Adventure episode 20, against Etemon |
| Ultimate to Mega (warp) | Agumon | WarGreymon | Digimon Adventure episode 39, against VenomMyotismon |
| Mega DNA | WarGreymon + MetalGarurumon | Omnimon (Omegamon) | Our War Game! (2000 film) |
| Rookie to Mega | Agumon | Agumon (Bond of Bravery) | Last Evolution Kizuna (2020 film) |
A few things worth knowing about that table. SkullGreymon is the warning the series gives you about pushing a partner too hard; Tai feeds Greymon by force in episode 16 and gets a mindless bone monster that beats Greymon in one hit and then collapses back to Koromon. Digimon Adventure 02 does something similar when the Digimon Emperor captures Agumon and forces a Virus-attribute MetalGreymon out of him with a Dark Spiral. And in Adventure: (2020), the reboot skips all the slow build: Agumon warp-evolves to Omnimon with Gabumon in episode 2, and MetalGreymon later picks up an Alterous Mode that never existed in the original.
The Data Squad (Savers) Agumon follows a completely different Greymon branch, and it’s the one you should quote if someone asks about Marcus’s partner:
| From | To | Medium |
|---|---|---|
| Koromon | Agumon (2006 anime) | Digimon Data Squad |
| Agumon | GeoGreymon | Digimon Data Squad |
| GeoGreymon | RizeGreymon | Digimon Data Squad |
| RizeGreymon | ShineGreymon | Digimon Data Squad |
| ShineGreymon | ShineGreymon Burst Mode | Digimon Data Squad |
ShineGreymon also has a Ruin Mode in Data Squad, the corrupted form that comes out of Marcus’s rage much like SkullGreymon came out of Tai’s. Same lesson, different decade.
Digimon World (1999)
The original PlayStation Digimon World is where Agumon’s “raise it right” reputation comes from. You can pick Agumon as your starting partner, and from there your stats, weight and care decide what he becomes. Agumon can evolve into Greymon, Tyrannomon, Meramon, Centarumon or Birdramon, with Numemon and Bakemon waiting as the fallback results if you neglect him.
How to raise Agumon into Greymon in Digimon World (1999)
- Choose Agumon as your partner when Jijimon offers the starting choice.
- Train until HP and MP both reach 1000.
- Bring Offense, Defense, Speed and Brains to at least 100 each.
- Keep his weight at 30 when the evolution window opens.
- Make three or fewer care mistakes during the Rookie stage.
Tamer tip
In Digimon World, Greymon is the “balanced” Champion, so don’t over-train any single stat. If you’ve already sent Offense way past the others, you’re drifting toward Tyrannomon or Meramon territory, and dropping a few Brains sessions in evens things out before the evolution check.
Digimon Story games
Cyber Sleuth and Hacker’s Memory treat Agumon as a Vaccine, Fire-element Rookie, and like every Rookie in those games he evolves once he clears a level threshold and a stat gate. His Champion options there are Greymon and GeoGreymon, so the game lets you choose between the Adventure line and the Data Squad line from the same Agumon. Both games also attach a personality to each Digimon that tilts stat growth, which matters more than it sounds when you’re farming for the Attack requirement.
| Game | From | To | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth (2015 JP / 2016 EN) | Koromon | Agumon | Level and stat gate |
| Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth | Agumon | Greymon | Level and Attack gate |
| Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth | Agumon | GeoGreymon | Level and stat gate |
| Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth Hacker’s Memory (2017 JP / 2018 EN) | Koromon | Agumon | Same system as Cyber Sleuth |
| Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth Hacker’s Memory | Agumon | Greymon, GeoGreymon | Same branches as Cyber Sleuth |
| Digimon Story: Time Stranger (2025) | Koromon | Agumon | Personality shapes stat growth |
| Digimon Story: Time Stranger | Agumon | Greymon | Classic Adventure branch |
Time Stranger keeps the Story-series approach: evolution is a menu, de-digivolving is free, and the personality you land on changes how Agumon’s stats climb. Reptile-type, Vaccine, Fire, same as his Cyber Sleuth sheet. If you want exact numbers for Time Stranger’s base stats and thresholds, check them in-game, because the balance has been patched since launch and any figure quoted from memory is a coin flip.
In Digimon World Next Order (2016 JP / 2017 EN), Agumon is one of the starter partners again, and the raising mechanics work like the 1999 game with stat and care requirements rather than menus.
Card game
The Digimon Card Game (2020) makes Agumon a Level 3 Red card: Rookie, Vaccine, Reptile, 2000 DP, play cost 3. He digivolves from any Level 2 Red Digimon-tamer stack for a cost of 0 and goes up into Level 4 Reds like Greymon. His first printings were ST1-03 in Starter Deck Gaia Red and BT1-010 in Release Special Booster Ver.1.0, and he has been reprinted with new effects many times since. The game also has Agumon (Bond of Bravery) as a Level 6 Red, its official English name for the Kizuna form.
| Card | Level | Colour | DP | Play cost | Digivolves from |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Koromon | Lv.2 | Red | – | – | Digi-Egg deck |
| Agumon (ST1-03 / BT1-010) | Lv.3 | Red | 2000 | 3 | Lv.2 for 0 |
| Greymon | Lv.4 | Red | 4000 | 5 | Lv.3 for 2 |
| MetalGreymon | Lv.5 | Red | 7000 | 7 | Lv.4 for 3 |
| WarGreymon | Lv.6 | Red | 11000 | 12 | Lv.5 for 4 |
| Omnimon | Lv.7 | Red/Blue | 15000 | 15 | DNA from WarGreymon and MetalGarurumon |
Those DP and cost figures are the standard values printed on the earliest Red Greymon-line cards; alternate arts and later versions tweak effects and sometimes costs, so always read the card in hand.
Long before the 2020 game, Agumon was also card number St-1 in the Japanese Hyper Colosseum game of 1999, the very first card in the very first set. That tells you everything about his place in the franchise.
Agumon (Bond of Bravery)
Last Evolution Kizuna (released in Japan on 21 February 2020) gave Agumon a form nobody saw coming. In Japan it’s Agumon -Yuuki no Kizuna-, usually translated as Bond of Courage; the English card game calls it Agumon (Bond of Bravery), and both names turn up in searches for the same Digimon.
It is a Mega-level form reached directly from Agumon, powered by the bond between Tai and his partner rather than a Crest or Digi-Egg. The design mashes WarGreymon’s armour and Omnimon’s silhouette into a lean fighter wearing a cloak with the Crest of Courage on it. Gabumon gets the matching Gabumon (Bond of Friendship) in the same film, and the two fight Eosmon together in the climax. The emotional cost is the whole point of the movie, so if you haven’t seen Kizuna I won’t spoil what the evolution means for Tai.
Signature attacks
Attack names shift between Japan, the dubs and the games, so here’s the map.
| English name | Japanese name | What it does | Medium |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pepper Breath | Baby Flame | Spits a ball of fire from the mouth | Reference Book, Digimon Adventure, 02, tri., Kizuna, Adventure: (2020), Data Squad |
| Claw Attack | Surudoi Tsume (Sharp Claw) | Slashes with the claws | Digimon Adventure, Data Squad |
| Spitfire Blast | Baby Burner | A larger, sustained stream of flame | Digimon Data Squad |
Pepper Breath is the one that defines him. In the Reference Book it’s listed as his single special move, and in Digimon Adventure it’s the attack he opens almost every fight with, usually to buy time before Greymon has to step in. Claw Attack shows up whenever the fireball doesn’t cut it and Agumon has to get physical, which happens a lot against bigger opponents. Spitfire Blast is Data Squad’s addition and suits that Agumon’s brawler personality: it’s less a warning shot and more a flamethrower.
The games generally hand Agumon a Fire-element special in the Pepper Breath mould plus a basic physical hit, and in the card game his “attacks” are whatever effect the specific printing carries, so there’s no single canonical move list beyond the Reference Book’s Baby Flame.
Appearances
Agumon is in more Digimon media than any other Digimon. This is the list that matters, with years and roles.

| Title | Year | Agumon’s role |

| Our War Game! | 2000 | Evolves to Omnimon with Gabumon |
| Digimon Adventure 02 | 2000 to 2001 | Supporting; captured by the Digimon Emperor |
| Digimon Data Squad (Savers) | 2006 to 2007 | Marcus’s partner, different design |
| Digimon Savers: Ultimate Power! Burst Mode Activate!! | 2006 | Data Squad Agumon film |
| Digimon Adventure tri. | 2015 to 2018 | Six films, Tai’s partner, Omnimon Merciful Mode finale |
| Digimon Adventure: Last Evolution Kizuna | 2020 | Agumon (Bond of Bravery) debut |
| Digimon Adventure: (2020) | 2020 to 2021 | Reboot, Tai’s partner, Omnimon in episode 2 |
| Digimon Adventure 02: The Beginning | 2023 | Supporting role with the original cast |
He also cameos in the finale of Digimon Xros Wars: The Young Hunters Who Leapt Through Time alongside Tai, when all the previous protagonists turn up. If you want to watch Agumon’s full story in order, go Adventure, Our War Game, 02, tri., Kizuna, then 02: The Beginning. Adventure: (2020) is a separate continuity and can be watched on its own.
Games
Agumon has been playable, raisable or recruitable in nearly every Digimon game ever made. The highlights:
- Digimon World (1999): starter choice, the classic raising experience.
- Digimon World 2 and Digimon World 3 (2000, 2002): obtainable partner, and in World 3 a possible starter depending on the pack you choose.
- Digimon World DS, Dawn and Dusk (2006 to 2007): recruitable with the Greymon line available through the DS games’ evolution system.
- Digimon World Data Squad (2007): Marcus’s partner, using the GeoGreymon line.
- Digimon Rumble Arena (2001) and Rumble Arena 2 (2004): playable fighter.
- Digimon Masters Online (2011 onward): starter partner with Agumon to Greymon to MetalGreymon to WarGreymon.
- Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth (2015) and Hacker’s Memory (2017): recruitable, Greymon or GeoGreymon branches.
- Digimon World Next Order (2016): starter partner.
- Digimon Survive (2022): Takuma Momozuka’s partner, with Greymon as his Champion and ending-dependent higher forms including WarGreymon.
- Digimon Story: Time Stranger (2025): recruitable, Greymon line.
Survive is the one to call out. It’s a visual novel with tactics battles, and Agumon’s higher evolutions depend on the karma route you push Takuma down, so Greymon can turn into something very different from WarGreymon if you play ruthless. It’s the closest a game has come to the SkullGreymon episode’s idea that your choices decide what your partner becomes.
Card game sets
In the Digimon Card Game, Agumon appears in Starter Deck Gaia Red (ST1-03, 2020), Release Special Booster Ver.1.0 (BT1-010, 2020) and plenty of later boosters and starter decks, both as the classic Red Rookie and as the Data Squad design in Red decks built around GeoGreymon. Agumon (Bond of Bravery) exists as a Red Level 6 card. Back in 1999, the Hyper Colosseum game opened with St-1 Agumon as its first ever card, and the Western Digi-Battle card game put him in its first set too.
Trivia
- His name comes from “agu agu”, the Japanese onomatopoeia for biting or chomping, which fits a Digimon whose two attacks are a fireball from the mouth and a claw swipe.
- Agumon was one of the two Rookie options on the original 1997 Digital Monster virtual pet, alongside Betamon. Good care took him to Greymon; neglect sent him to Numemon.
- Chika Sakamoto has voiced Agumon in Japanese since 1999, through Adventure, 02, tri., Kizuna and the 2020 reboot. In English, Tom Fahn voiced him in Adventure, 02, tri. and Kizuna, and Ben Diskin took the role for the Adventure: (2020) dub.
- The Data Squad Agumon is voiced by Taiki Matsuno in Japanese and Brian Beacock in English, and the Reference Book lists it as a separate entry, Agumon (2006 anime).
- Agumon has a whole family of variants: BlackAgumon, a Virus-attribute recolour; Agumon X, the X-Antibody version; SnowAgumon; ToyAgumon; and the lab-coated Agumon Hakase, localised as Agumon (Expert).
- The Reference Book lists him under the Nature Spirits and Virus Busters families, which is why he fits in both Fire and holy-themed deck archetypes in older card games.
- In Digimon Adventure episode 16, SkullGreymon is the first time the series shows an evolution going wrong. Tai spends the next arc too scared to let Agumon evolve at all, which is why MetalGreymon’s debut in episode 20 lands so hard.
- Adventure: (2020) deliberately inverts the pacing: Omnimon appears in the second episode, something that took 54 episodes and a movie the first time round.
FAQ
How tall is Agumon?
Bandai’s Digimon Reference Book doesn’t list heights or weights for Agumon, so there’s no official figure. On screen in Digimon Adventure he stands roughly chest-high on an 11-year-old Tai, which puts him at around a metre tall. The Data Squad design reads slightly taller next to Marcus, but again, that’s scaling from the animation rather than an official stat.
What level is Agumon?
Rookie, which Japanese materials call Child level. He’s a Vaccine attribute, Reptile type in the Reference Book, and every anime and game keeps those three facts consistent. The Data Squad version is also a Rookie Vaccine Reptile.
What does Agumon evolve into?
In Digimon Adventure he becomes Greymon, then MetalGreymon, then WarGreymon, with Omnimon as the DNA form with MetalGarurumon and SkullGreymon as the dark detour. In Data Squad the line is GeoGreymon, RizeGreymon, ShineGreymon. Digimon World (1999) lets him become Greymon, Tyrannomon, Meramon, Centarumon or Birdramon depending on stats and care, and Cyber Sleuth offers Greymon or GeoGreymon from the same Agumon.
What is Agumon’s Pepper Breath?
Pepper Breath is the English dub name for Baby Flame, Agumon’s listed special move: a ball of fire spat from his mouth. It’s his opening attack in almost every Adventure episode and the move most games give him as his Fire special.
What is Agumon Bond of Bravery?
Agumon (Bond of Bravery) is the English card game name for Agumon -Yuuki no Kizuna-, also translated as Bond of Courage. It’s a Mega-level Vaccine form that debuted in Digimon Adventure: Last Evolution Kizuna in 2020, reached straight from Agumon through his bond with Tai, with Gabumon (Bond of Friendship) as its partner form.
Is Agumon on Wikimon the same as the anime Agumon?
Wikimon and the Reference Book both document the species, so the entry covers the classic design, the Data Squad design as Agumon (2006 anime), and the variants like BlackAgumon and Agumon X as separate pages. Tai’s partner is an individual Agumon of the classic species, which is why fan sites split anime character pages from species pages.
