Greymon is a Champion-level, Vaccine-attribute Dinosaur Digimon. It is best known as the form Tai’s Agumon digivolves into in Digimon Adventure, on the road to MetalGreymon and WarGreymon. This profile covers its evolution line in the anime, the Digimon Story games and the card game, plus its attacks, appearances and the trivia fans tend to argue about.

Who is Greymon

Picture the classic Digimon dinosaur: orange skin with blue stripes, huge claws, and a brown skull-like helmet topped with three horns. Its head armor is its trademark, and it doubles as a weapon when Greymon charges horns-first. It debuted as a Champion on the original Digital Monster Ver.1 virtual pet in 1997. Raise an Agumon well on that toy and Greymon is your reward. It has worked as the “good ending” Champion of the franchise ever since.

Most fans met Greymon through Digimon Adventure (1999), where Agumon becomes Greymon to protect Tai Kamiya (Taichi Yagami) and the other DigiDestined. Its English and Japanese names are the same, グレイモン in katakana. The level name is what changes: Japanese material calls Champion the “Adult” stage. In the series, Greymon is fierce and powerful, but its story is really about whether its partner can handle that power responsibly. The SkullGreymon episode shows how badly things go when he can’t.

Evolution line

Here is where you need to know which medium you’re looking at. Greymon’s line is very stable compared with most Digimon. Agumon to Greymon to MetalGreymon is about as close to “canon” as this franchise gets. Still, the anime, the games and the card game handle digivolution in completely different ways.

Anime: Digimon Adventure (1999)

In the original series, Tai’s partner follows the line that has become the face of the franchise. Agumon starts out as Botamon, and Greymon is his first Champion form.

From To How it happens in the anime
Koromon (In-Training) Agumon (Rookie) Standard growth once Agumon has enough energy
Agumon (Rookie) Greymon (Champion) Tai’s Digivice reacts when Tai is in danger; first seen in episode 2, “The Birth of Greymon”
Greymon (Champion) MetalGreymon (Ultimate) Unlocked once Tai’s Crest of Courage activates properly, during the Etemon arc
Greymon (Champion) SkullGreymon (Ultimate) Dark digivolution when Tai overfeeds Agumon and forces a digivolution out of recklessness
MetalGreymon (Ultimate) WarGreymon (Mega) Reached later in the series through warp digivolution

The SkullGreymon branch is the one to remember. Tai thought courage meant charging in no matter what. The Crest punished that, turning Greymon into a Skeleton-type Virus Ultimate that went berserk and attacked friend and foe alike. Only after Tai learns the difference between bravery and recklessness does Greymon reach MetalGreymon the right way.

The 2020 reboot, Digimon Adventure:, keeps the same core line: Agumon, Greymon, MetalGreymon, WarGreymon. It just moves through it at a different pace with new battles. Our Digimon Adventure series guide breaks down how the original, tri. and the reboot connect if you’re planning a rewatch.

Digimon Story games: Cyber Sleuth and Time Stranger

The Digimon Story games, developed by Media.Vision and published by Bandai Namco, use an open digivolution web instead of fixed partner lines. Every Digimon can digivolve and de-digivolve between several forms, and each move up a level has requirements you must meet first.

Game From To Requirement type
Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth / Hacker’s Memory Agumon Greymon Level and stat thresholds shown on the Digivolution screen
Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth / Hacker’s Memory Greymon MetalGreymon Level and stat thresholds shown on the Digivolution screen
Digimon Story: Time Stranger Agumon Greymon Stat thresholds plus your Agent Rank
Digimon Story: Time Stranger Greymon MetalGreymon Stat thresholds plus your Agent Rank

These games may list more branches into and out of Greymon than the table shows. The table sticks to the Agumon, Greymon, MetalGreymon spine, which is the safe path in every Story entry. Open the Digivolution menu in your own save to see the full set of arrows and the exact numbers. Thresholds can differ between versions and patches, so the in-game screen beats any list you find online, this one included.

One detail trips up a lot of players hunting for MetalGreymon in Time Stranger. The Digimon database has two separate MetalGreymon entries: the Vaccine MetalGreymon from the anime and a Virus-attribute MetalGreymon. Check the attribute icon on the target before you commit. That matters if you’re building around Vaccine-type advantages.

How to get Greymon in Digimon Story: Time Stranger

Digimon Story: Time Stranger launched on October 3, 2025 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. Greymon is an early to mid-game Champion, and getting it follows the same loop as most of the Time Stranger Digimon list.

How to get Greymon in Digimon Story: Time Stranger

  1. Get an Agumon (or a Koromon to raise into Agumon) by scanning it in battle and converting the data.
  2. Add it to your party and battle to raise its level and stats.
  3. Open the Digivolution screen and select Greymon from Agumon’s options.
  4. Check which stat and Agent Rank requirements are still unmet.
  5. Train until every requirement is met, then digivolve.
  6. Repeat the process from Greymon to reach MetalGreymon.

Your Agent Rank is usually what holds people back, so keep up with story progress and side requests instead of grinding stats alone. For the bigger picture on systems, ranks and progression, see our Digimon Story Time Stranger complete game overview.

Tamer tip

In Cyber Sleuth, de-digivolving a Champion back to Rookie and climbing again raises its ABI, which lifts stat growth and unlocks stronger digivolutions later. Bouncing Agumon and Greymon back and forth early pays off big by the time you’re chasing WarGreymon.

If you’re coming from the 2015 game, our Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth complete game overview explains how its digivolution web compares with Time Stranger’s.

Card game: Digimon Card Game (2020 onward)

The current Digimon Card Game, launched by Bandai in 2020 (English release from 2021), uses numbered levels instead of names. Greymon cards are Level 4, which matches Champion, and are printed in red, the color tied to Agumon and Tai’s line. The cards list Greymon’s attribute as Vaccine and its type as Dinosaur, matching the anime and games.

Card game level Equivalent From / To
Level 3 Rookie Agumon and other red Level 3 Digimon digivolve into Greymon
Level 4 Champion Greymon
Level 5 Ultimate Greymon digivolves into red Level 5 cards such as MetalGreymon
Level 6 Mega MetalGreymon leads into WarGreymon and other red Level 6 cards

The key difference from the anime: the card game doesn’t lock Greymon to Agumon. Any Greymon card states its digivolve requirement in the top-left corner, usually a color and a level plus a memory cost. Any Digimon meeting that requirement can digivolve into it. Many Greymon cards also have effects that reward you for having a specific Digimon or trait in the stack underneath. That’s why Agumon stays the natural pick even though the rules allow other options.

Signature attacks

Greymon’s moveset is short, punchy and very fire-heavy. These are the attacks the anime and long-running game localizations have used most consistently.

Attack (English) Japanese name Where you’ll see it What it does
Nova Blast Mega Flame (メガフレイム) Digimon Adventure English dub Fires a huge blazing fireball from the mouth
Mega Flame Mega Flame Digimon World (PS1) and other games that keep the Japanese name Same fireball, different localization
Great Horns Attack Great Antler (グレートアントラー) Digimon Adventure English dub Rams the enemy with its helmet horns

Nova Blast is the one you’ll hear fans shout at conventions. The English dub turned “Mega Flame” into Nova Blast, and that name became so iconic it outlived the original translation in many fan circles. Some games still use the Japanese “Mega Flame,” which explains why you might see two names for the same attack.

The horn charge gets less airtime in the anime but explains Greymon’s design perfectly. That helmet isn’t decoration. Its whole fighting style is “breathe fire from range, then smash into the target with the horns up close.”

Appearances

Greymon has appeared in almost every era of the franchise. The tables below focus on its major roles and the appearances that most searches ask about.

Anime series and movies

Title Years Greymon’s role
Digimon Adventure (short film) 1999 A giant Agumon digivolves into Greymon and fights Parrotmon in Hikarigaoka, Tokyo
Digimon Adventure (TV series) 1999-2000 Champion form of Tai’s partner Agumon; debuts in episode 2
Digimon Adventure: Our War Game! 2000 Battles the internet virus Digimon before the story heads toward Omnimon
Digimon: The Movie (US release) 2000 Dubbed footage from the first two Japanese films stitched into one release
Digimon Adventure 02 2000-2001 Returns as a support fighter for the new DigiDestined
Digimon Fusion (Digimon Xros Wars) 2010-2012 Kiriha Aonuma’s partner, a blue-colored Greymon
Digimon Adventure tri. 2015-2018 Tai’s Agumon is back as Greymon in the six-part film series
Digimon Adventure: (reboot) 2020-2021 Same Agumon, Greymon, MetalGreymon, WarGreymon line in a new timeline

The 1999 short film is worth watching if you’ve never seen it. Mamoru Hosoda directed it, and the Greymon versus Parrotmon fight in Hikarigaoka is the seed the whole Adventure story grew from. Several DigiDestined witnessed that fight as children, which is exactly why they were picked later. It hit Japanese theaters in March 1999, the same month the TV series premiered.

Our War Game!, also directed by Hosoda, is the other essential watch. It’s the film that created Omnimon (Omegamon), the fusion of WarGreymon and MetalGarurumon. It’s also one of the best showcases of Agumon’s line from start to finish.

Video games

Game Release Greymon’s role
Digimon World 1999 (Japan), 2000 (West) Raisable Champion from Agumon; uses Mega Flame
Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth 2015 (Japan), 2016 (West) Obtainable Champion in the digivolution web
Digimon World: Next Order 2016 (Japan), 2017 (West) Raisable Champion partner
Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth Hacker’s Memory 2017 (Japan), 2018 (West) Obtainable Champion
Digimon Survive 2022 Champion form of Agumon, Takuma Momozuka’s partner
Digimon Story: Time Stranger 2025 Obtainable Champion, leading to MetalGreymon

Digimon World on the PS1 is where a lot of older Tamers first earned Greymon the hard way. You had to keep Agumon fed, rested, trained and free of too many care mistakes. That raising-sim DNA lives on in Next Order. The Story games, from Cyber Sleuth to Time Stranger, swap the pet care for a turn-based RPG where Greymon is one of hundreds of collectible Digimon.

In Digimon Survive, the dynamic is closer to the anime. Agumon is a story partner, and its digivolutions are tied to the choices you make with Takuma and the rest of the cast.

Card game sets

In the current Digimon Card Game, Greymon first appeared in the earliest red products, most famously Starter Deck Gaia Red (ST-1). That deck is built around Tai’s Agumon line, from Koromon up to WarGreymon. New Greymon cards have followed in boosters since then, with different effects that support either “go tall” WarGreymon decks or aggressive red strategies.

The 2023 Starter Deck Dragon of Courage (ST-15) revisited Agumon’s line for a newer generation of players. If you want a ready-built way into red, both starters remain popular gateways. Check the exact card list of any printing before you buy, because reprints and alternate versions of Greymon have different effects even when the art looks similar.

Blue, black and other Greymon relatives

Plenty of searches are for “blue Greymon” or “black Greymon,” and the answer isn’t one Digimon. The Greymon family is huge, so here’s how to keep the relatives straight:

  • Blue Greymon: Kiriha Aonuma’s partner in Digimon Fusion (Digimon Xros Wars) is a blue-colored Greymon. Through DigiFuse (DigiXros) with MailBirdramon, it becomes a blue MetalGreymon.
  • BlackGreymon: a dark-colored Greymon that the database treats as a separate entry, not a skin of regular Greymon.
  • GeoGreymon: the Champion form of Marcus Damon’s Agumon in Digimon Data Squad (Digimon Savers). Its line goes GeoGreymon, RizeGreymon, ShineGreymon, and it’s a different Digimon with a new design.
  • MetalGreymon (Virus): the Virus-attribute counterpart to the Vaccine MetalGreymon from the anime. Both exist as separate database entries.
  • SkullGreymon: a Skeleton-type, Virus-attribute Ultimate and the dark digivolution of Greymon in Digimon Adventure.

If you want the whole family drawn out, our Digimon evolution chart lays out every major evolution line, including the many Greymon relatives.

Trivia

Greymon came before the anime. Its debut was the Digital Monster Ver.1 virtual pet in 1997, two years before Digimon Adventure. Botamon, Koromon, Agumon and Greymon were all part of that first device’s lineup, which is why the Agumon line feels like the franchise’s DNA.

Its fame comes from Tai. Plenty of Digimon have strong designs, but Greymon’s popularity comes from the original anime’s emotional arcs. The first digivolution against Shellmon, the SkullGreymon disaster, and the long road to MetalGreymon gave Greymon real character development, not just a fighting role.

The same name works in both languages. Unlike Gatomon (Tailmon) or Patamon’s relatives, Greymon kept its Japanese name in English. Only its attack names changed in the dub.

“Nova Blast” is a dub invention. The Japanese move is Mega Flame, and some English games kept that name. If you grew up on both the dub and the PS1 Digimon World, you’ve already seen both versions.

SkullGreymon is a lesson, not a power-up. Many fans picture SkullGreymon as a “secret” evolution. In the anime, it’s the result of Tai’s mistake. In the Story games and the card game, it’s a normal Ultimate you can work toward on purpose, which makes it fun to finally control.

Greymon is half of the franchise’s most famous rivalry. Tai and Matt’s partners mirror each other across every stage: Greymon and Garurumon, MetalGreymon and WereGarurumon, WarGreymon and MetalGarurumon. Our War Game! cemented that pairing by fusing the two Megas into Omnimon.

Greymon versus Parrotmon is a founding moment. The 1999 short film’s fight explains why specific kids became DigiDestined. It’s a rare case of a short film setting up the plot of a full TV series.

It’s a franchise mascot in all but name. With roles across the Adventure films, two TV generations, multiple game series and starter decks in the card game, Greymon is one of the most-featured Champions Bandai has. If you want to know more about the series that made it a star, start with Digimon Adventure itself.

FAQ

What level and attribute is Greymon?

Greymon is a Champion-level Digimon with the Vaccine attribute and the Dinosaur type. That holds for the anime, the Digimon Story games and the Digimon Card Game, where it’s printed as a red Level 4. In Japanese material, Champion is called the Adult level.

What does Greymon digivolve into?

In Digimon Adventure, Greymon digivolves into MetalGreymon once Tai’s Crest of Courage activates, and later reaches WarGreymon. It can also dark digivolve into SkullGreymon, as it did when Tai forced it. In the Digimon Story games, MetalGreymon is the standard next step, with any extra branches listed on the in-game Digivolution screen.

How do you get MetalGreymon in Digimon Story: Time Stranger?

Raise Agumon into Greymon first, then meet the stat and Agent Rank requirements shown on Greymon’s Digivolution screen. Make sure you pick the Vaccine MetalGreymon if that’s the one you want. The game also has a Virus-attribute MetalGreymon.

Is blue Greymon a real Digimon?

Yes. Kiriha Aonuma’s partner in Digimon Fusion (Digimon Xros Wars) is a blue Greymon that fuses with MailBirdramon to become a blue MetalGreymon. It’s separate from the orange Greymon of Digimon Adventure.

What’s the difference between Greymon and GeoGreymon?

GeoGreymon is the Champion form of Marcus Damon’s Agumon in Digimon Data Squad (Digimon Savers), with its own line through RizeGreymon to ShineGreymon. Greymon belongs to Tai’s Agumon and the classic Adventure line. Both are Champion-level dinosaurs, but they’re different Digimon with different designs.

Is it Greymon or “Greymoon”?

It’s Greymon, ending in “mon” like every Digimon name. “Greymoon” is a common typo, and it always points to this same orange dinosaur.

What is Greymon’s signature attack?

Its signature attack is a giant fireball known as Nova Blast in the Digimon Adventure English dub and Mega Flame in Japanese and in several games. Its secondary move, Great Horns Attack (Great Antler), is a charge with its helmet horns.
