Digimon Story Time Stranger beginner’s guide and tips

If you typed “stranger in time” looking for Digimon, the game you want is Digimon Story Time Stranger, Bandai Namco’s 2025 monster-raising RPG. Below are the beginner tips I wish I’d had on day one, plus the key facts and tables a new Tamer needs.

Stranger in Time, Strangers in Time or Time Stranger?

A quick clarification first. The search “stranger in time” mostly brings up Strangers in Time, David Baldacci’s World War II novel. That book has nothing to do with Digimon. The game is Digimon Story Time Stranger, developed by Media.Vision, the studio behind Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth. You play an agent of ADAMAS, a secret organisation that investigates anomalies. Your partner is Aegiomon, a Digimon created for this game. The story moves between the human world and the Digital World, and time travel sits at the centre of the plot.

The 8 tips I give every new Tamer

1. Read the digivolution requirements before chasing a Mega

Every Digimon in the game shows the conditions it needs to digivolve to each possible form, such as a minimum level or certain stats. On my first run I wasted hours grinding a Champion that was only missing one stat. Check the requirements screen first, then train toward the gap. You save a lot of time that way, and the evolution chart and Agumon guide on this site walks you through a full line step by step.

How to digivolve a Digimon in Time Stranger

  1. Open your party or farm Digimon menu.
  2. Select the Digimon you want to change.
  3. Check each digivolution option and its requirements.
  4. Train the missing level or stats.
  5. Confirm the digivolution once every condition is met.

2. Learn the attribute triangle in the first hour

The game uses the Vaccine, Data and Virus triangle that fans know from Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth. Hitting a weakness makes fights shorter, and getting hit on yours makes them longer.

Attacker Strong against Weak against
Vaccine Virus Data
Data Vaccine Virus
Virus Data Vaccine
Free Neutral Neutral

3. Build a mixed team, not a pile of favourites

My early party was all Virus types because they looked cool. A single Vaccine boss ended that idea fast. I now keep one Digimon of each main attribute in the active party, plus a Free type to cover the gaps. Elemental moves add another layer, so look at the moves a Digimon learns as well as its attribute.

4. Know your levels and the Japanese terms

Japanese guides and Reddit threads mix English and Japanese level names, which confuses a lot of new players. Use this table to translate them.

English level Japanese term
In-Training Baby II (Yonenki)
Rookie Child (Seichouki)
Champion Adult (Seijukuki)
Ultimate Perfect (Kanzentai)
Mega Ultimate (Kyuukyokutai)

5. Scan wild Digimon early and often

Battling builds scan data, and that data lets you add new Digimon to your roster. I scan everything I meet in a new area, even species I don’t plan to use. Later digivolution lines sometimes need a Digimon you’d ignore on paper.

6. Do the side quests

Side quests are where the game hides useful rewards and some of its best character writing. If you rush the main story, you’ll fall behind on levels and miss Digimon cameos that longtime fans of the Digimon franchise will love.

Tamer tip

Clear the side quests in a new area before you take on its story boss. The extra levels usually make the fight trivial.

7. Keep several save files

Use more than one save slot before major story fights. If a boss wipes your party, you lose ten minutes instead of an hour.

8. Don’t rush to Mega

Rookies and Champions with good moves carry the early game well, and some powerful forms come from less obvious paths. Experiment before you lock a favourite into its final form.
