Gabumon

Gabumon Digimon file

Gabumon is a Rookie-level, Data-attribute Reptile Digimon that hides a shy, lizard-like body under a Garurumon pelt, and it is best known as Matt Ishida’s partner in Digimon Adventure. Across the anime, the Digimon Story games and the card game, its line almost always runs Tsunomon, Gabumon, Garurumon, WereGarurumon, MetalGarurumon, with Omnimon waiting at the end when Agumon‘s line is nearby. This profile covers the official data, every version of the evolution line with its medium named, the attacks, where Gabumon shows up and the questions fans ask most, including the fur and the black variant.

Who is Gabumon

You probably picture a blue-and-white striped wolf cub with a horn, but the official profile is clear: Gabumon is a Reptile Digimon, and that fur is a pelt stripped from a Garurumon. Underneath it is a timid lizard with a yellow horn and sharp claws. The Digimon Reference Book describes Gabumon as so shy that it hates showing its real body, so it keeps the pelt on at all times and will fight to protect it. That one design choice explains its whole character. It looks like a beast, acts like a beast when cornered, and is actually a soft-hearted reptile putting on a brave face.

Gabumon’s anime debut came in Digimon Adventure (1999), where it became the partner of Matt Ishida (Yamato Ishida), holder of the Crest of Friendship. The virtual pet came first: the Gabumon line was part of the original Digimon Pendulum series in 1998, which is why Garurumon and WereGarurumon already existed when the anime needed them. In every medium since, Gabumon has been one of the “big two” Rookies alongside Agumon, the blue to its orange, the loyal counterweight to the hot-headed dinosaur.

Gabumon and Agumon: the original pairing

Agumon and Gabumon are the only two Rookies that have been treated as a matched set in almost everything Bandai makes. In the original Digimon World on PlayStation (1999) they are the two starter partners you choose between. In the Digimon Card Game, the first two starter decks were Starter Deck 1 Gaia Red (Agumon’s line) and Starter Deck 2 Cocytus Blue (Gabumon’s line). In Digimon Adventure their Megas, WarGreymon and MetalGarurumon, fuse into Omnimon (Omegamon), the single most famous DNA Digivolution in the franchise.

The pairing works because the personalities clash in a useful way. Agumon is forward, hungry and quick to charge. Gabumon holds back, thinks about Matt first and only commits when it matters. Watch any fight where both are present and you’ll see Gabumon’s line take the defensive or flanking role while Greymon’s line goes straight at the enemy. That dynamic carried straight into Digimon Adventure: Last Evolution Kizuna (2020), where each gets its own standalone Mega, Agumon Bond of Courage and Gabumon Bond of Friendship.

Evolution line

The core road is identical everywhere, but the details are not. Levels, conditions and side branches depend on the medium, so each table below names the source it comes from.

Digimon Adventure anime (1999) and its sequels

This is the line most people mean when they say “Gabumon’s evolution line”. Every stage here was shown on screen.

Stage Digimon First on-screen evolution
Fresh (Baby) Punimon Shown in flashbacks and the 2020 reboot
In-Training Tsunomon Episode 1, Digimon Adventure (1999)
Rookie Gabumon Episode 1, evolves from Tsunomon during the Kuwagamon fight
Champion Garurumon Episode 3, “Garurumon”, against Seadramon
Ultimate WereGarurumon Episode 23, “WereGarurumon’s Diner”, against Digitamamon
Mega MetalGarurumon Episode 38, “Prophecy”, Warp Digivolution against VenomMyotismon
Mega (DNA) Omnimon (Omegamon) Digimon Adventure: Our War Game! (2000), MetalGarurumon fuses with WarGreymon
Mega (alternate) Gabumon Bond of Friendship Digimon Adventure: Last Evolution Kizuna (2020)

A few notes on how the anime treats this line. Garurumon is the second Champion to appear in the whole series, one episode after Greymon, and the Seadramon fight is the reason the “friendship” theme attaches to Gabumon so early: it evolves because Matt refuses to leave T.K. on a drifting bed. The Warp Digivolution in “Prophecy” skips Garurumon and WereGarurumon entirely, which later games turn into a fixed “jump straight to Mega” mechanic.

Digimon Adventure tri. (2015 to 2018) and Last Evolution Kizuna keep the same ladder, with Omnimon returning in tri.’s first film, Reunion, and gaining Merciful Mode in tri.’s final film, Part 6: Future (2018). The 2020 reboot, simply titled Digimon Adventure:, reuses the identical line and fast-tracks Omnimon into its second episode. So if you’re ever asked “what does Gabumon evolve into in the anime”, the answer is Garurumon, then WereGarurumon, then MetalGarurumon, and Omnimon when WarGreymon is present.

Digimon Story games

The Digimon Story series (Cyber Sleuth, Hacker’s Memory and Digimon Story Time Stranger) lets Digimon branch far more widely than the anime, with requirements built on level, individual stats, CAM (camaraderie) and ABI (ability). The table lists the connections that hold across the series. Exact stat thresholds differ between Cyber Sleuth’s original release, its Complete Edition and Time Stranger, so always confirm the numbers on the in-game digivolution screen for your version before you grind.

Game Evolves from Evolves to How requirements work
Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth (PS Vita 2015 JP, PS4/Vita 2016 West) Tsunomon Garurumon and other Champion branches Level plus a stat minimum per target; Mega targets also need ABI
Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth Hacker’s Memory (2017 JP, 2018 West) Tsunomon Garurumon and other Champion branches Same system as Cyber Sleuth
Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth Complete Edition (Switch/PC 2019) Tsunomon Garurumon and other Champion branches Same system, both games’ rosters combined
Digimon Story Time Stranger (PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, 2025) Tsunomon Garurumon and other Champion branches Level, stats and the new personality system shape growth

In these games Gabumon’s own Rookie stats are modest: it is an all-rounder that leans toward attack rather than special attack, which suits the physical Garurumon line it feeds into. Cyber Sleuth’s personality system matters here. Each “time stranger digimon” and each Cyber Sleuth Digimon has a personality that skews stat growth, and a Gabumon rolled with a Fighter personality will reach Champion stat thresholds noticeably faster than one with Brainy. If your Gabumon’s personality is wrong for the direction you want, you can retrain it through the in-game training facilities rather than catching a new one.

Tamer tip

In the Digimon Story games, do not sprint to MetalGarurumon with your first Gabumon. De-digivolve back to Gabumon once or twice first. Every de-digivolution raises ABI, and ABI gates the Mega and DNA targets you actually want, including Omnimon.

Digimon Card Game (Bandai, 2020 JP / 2021 global)

In the card game Gabumon is a Level 3 (Rookie) blue card with the Data attribute and Reptile type. The line below uses the standard digivolution costs that Gabumon’s starter and booster printings follow.

Card level Digimon Typical digivolve cost Notes
Level 2 (Digi-Egg) Tsunomon Placed in the breeding area Blue egg
Level 3 Gabumon 0 from a blue Level 2 Rookie, Data, Reptile
Level 4 Garurumon 2 from a blue Level 3 Champion
Level 5 WereGarurumon 3 from a blue Level 4 Ultimate
Level 6 MetalGarurumon 4 from a blue Level 5 Mega
Level 7 Omnimon From WarGreymon or MetalGarurumon; later printings DNA digivolve from both Introduced DNA Digivolution with the Battle of Omni set

The Starter Deck 2 Cocytus Blue deck is still the cleanest way to learn the line: it is a straight Tsunomon-to-MetalGarurumon ladder with blue’s signature tricks, which are stunning opposing Digimon and returning them to the deck. Gabumon’s own card text has varied by printing, so check the exact card you own before building around an effect.

Other games worth knowing

Digimon World (PlayStation, 1999) is where most Western fans first raised a Gabumon by hand. It is one of the two starter partners.

How to get Gabumon in Digimon World (1999)

  1. Start a new game and sit through the prologue in File City.
  2. When the game offers you Agumon or Gabumon as your starting partner, choose Gabumon.
  3. Train and feed it properly: Digimon World judges evolution by stats, care mistakes and weight, so a neglected Gabumon will not become Garurumon.

Gabumon is also a playable fighter in Digimon Rumble Arena (PlayStation, 2001) and Digimon Rumble Arena 2 (2004), and it has been a standard roster Digimon in Digimon World: Next Order, Digimon World DS, Dawn and Dusk, Digimon Masters Online and the mobile titles Digimon Links and Digimon ReArise.

Signature attacks

Gabumon has two attacks that appear in essentially every medium. English dub names come first, with the Japanese names in brackets.

Attack Japanese name What it does
Blue Blaster Petit Fire (プチファイア) Breathes a stream of blue flame. The signature move in the anime and the special attack in most games.
Horn Attack Little Horn (リトルホーン) A headbutt or charge driven by the sharp horn on its head. The physical option.

Blue Blaster is the one you’ll hear Matt shout for. It is a surprisingly strong Rookie attack in Digimon Adventure, enough to drive off Champion-level threats in early episodes before Garurumon takes over, and its blue colour carries straight through the line: Garurumon’s Howling Blaster (Fox Fire), MetalGarurumon’s icy artillery and even Omnimon’s Supreme Cannon (Garuru Cannon) all keep the blue ice-and-fire motif. Horn Attack shows up more in games, where it gives Gabumon a physical move to pair with the fire-based special.

In the Digimon Story games Gabumon’s special skill is named Blue Blaster, and it is one of the skills you can carry forward through inheritance when you digivolve, so a MetalGarurumon raised from this Gabumon can still fire it.

Gabumon without fur

The second most searched question about this Digimon after its evolutions is what it looks like underneath, and the answer comes from the Reference Book plus one anime scene. Officially, the fur is Garurumon’s pelt and Gabumon is a reptile wearing it. The profile stresses that it is shy and does not show its real body to anyone.

Digimon Adventure episode 9, “Subzero Ice Punch!”, is where you actually see it. Stranded on the frozen part of File Island, Matt is close to freezing in the night, and Gabumon takes the pelt off and lays it over him so he can sleep warm. The camera gives you a brief look at the bare, scaled body with the horn and the stripes gone. It is played for a laugh, with Gabumon embarrassed about being seen, but it is also the single clearest statement of what the “Friendship” crest means. The one thing Gabumon would never willingly do, it does for Matt without being asked.

Fans in Japan have a long-running joke that Gabumon’s true form proves it is “a lizard cosplaying as a wolf”, and the designers have leaned into it. The X-Antibody version, Gabumon X, has a more wolf-shaped pelt, while the fur on Gabumon Bond of Friendship becomes a full body-length cloak.

BlackGabumon and other variants

Searches for “gabumon black”, “blackgabumon” and “gabumon blk” all point at the same Digimon. BlackGabumon is a Virus-attribute palette swap, usually listed in game menus as Gabumon (Black). It is still a Rookie Reptile Digimon, but the pelt is black with grey-blue stripes, and its evolution line stays dark all the way up.

Variant Level Attribute Evolution line (games)
Gabumon Rookie Data Garurumon, WereGarurumon, MetalGarurumon
BlackGabumon / Gabumon (Black) Rookie Virus BlackGarurumon, ShadowWereGarurumon, BlackMetalGarurumon
Gabumon X (X-Antibody) Rookie Data Garurumon X, WereGarurumon X, MetalGarurumon X
Gabumon Bond of Friendship Mega Listed in the Reference Book Evolves directly from Gabumon in Last Evolution Kizuna (2020)

BlackGabumon is a game-side creation; it has never been an anime partner. You will find Gabumon (Black) in the Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth games and other Bandai RPGs, and the black line is popular with players because BlackMetalGarurumon trades MetalGarurumon’s Data attribute for Virus, which changes the attribute triangle matchups (Vaccine beats Virus, Virus beats Data, Data beats Vaccine). If you want to run two Garurumon-style attackers without both being weak to the same enemy type, one regular and one black is the classic answer.

Gabumon X comes from the Digimon Chronicle and Pendulum X era (2004), when the X-Antibody program redesigned dozens of Digimon. The X version keeps the Rookie level and Data attribute. Gabumon Bond of Friendship is the newest member of the family: it debuted in Digimon Adventure: Last Evolution Kizuna in 2020, is listed as a Mega in most sources and as Ultra in some media such as Digimon ReArise, and comes into existence when Matt’s Digivice, drained of its remaining time, pushes Gabumon straight to a gigantic humanoid form with dark blue armor and futuristic wings. It is one of the most striking Digimon designs of the last decade and quickly landed cards in the Digimon Card Game.

The reboot changed the voice: in Japan, Mayumi Yamaguchi voiced Gabumon from 1999 through Kizuna, and Mutsumi Tamura took the role for the 2020 series. In English, Kirk Thornton has voiced Gabumon since the 1999 dub. If you want to watch the original run today, the “digimon hulu” situation in the United States is good: Digimon Adventure streams on Hulu and Crunchyroll, and Discotek’s Blu-ray sets cover the full series.

Games

Gabumon is in virtually every Digimon RPG and fighter ever released. The important ones: Digimon World (1999, starter choice), Digimon World 2, 3 and 4, Digimon Rumble Arena and Rumble Arena 2, Digimon World DS, Dawn and Dusk, the Digimon Adventure PSP game (2013), Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth and Hacker’s Memory, Digimon World: Next Order, Digimon Masters Online, Digimon Links, Digimon ReArise and “digimon story time stranger“, the 2025 entry on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. The one notable absence is Digimon Survive (2022), which uses Agumon as its lead partner and leaves Gabumon out of the main cast.

Card game

In the Digimon Card Game Gabumon has had a card in Starter Deck 2 Cocytus Blue and in multiple booster sets since, always as a blue Level 3 with Data attribute and Reptile type. The line’s identity in the card game is tempo and disruption: blue’s effects stun or bounce enemy Digimon, and Garurumon and MetalGarurumon cards tend to carry those effects. Gabumon Bond of Friendship and Omnimon give blue its late-game finishers. For the older Hyper Colosseum card game from 1999 and the Bandai Digi-Battle game sold in the West, Gabumon was a Rookie in the first sets, as you’d expect from Matt’s partner.

Virtual pets and toys

The line started on the Digimon Pendulum virtual pet in 1998, before the anime, which is why the 1999 Digivice toy could ship with the Gabumon line already in it. Understanding how a “digivice works” as a toy explains a lot about the show’s pacing: the device raised your partner through the same Rookie-to-Mega ladder the anime used. Gabumon has had plush toys, Figure-rise and S.H.Figuarts-adjacent figures through its Megas, and the 20th anniversary Pendulum (2018) brought the original line back. Collectors hunting a specific “digimon toy” from this line usually chase the MetalGarurumon and Omnimon figures, which hold value far better than the Rookie plushes.

Trivia

  • The name comes from “gabu”, the Japanese sound for biting or chomping down, which fits a Digimon whose Champion form is a wolf. The Japanese spelling is ガブモン, so there is no separate Japanese name to learn.
  • Gabumon is officially a Reptile type, not a Beast type. Garurumon, WereGarurumon and MetalGarurumon are all Beast or cyborg-beast types, so the family changes classification the moment the fur becomes real.
  • The pelt lore cuts both ways: Gabumon evolves into Garurumon, yet it is wearing a Garurumon’s pelt. The Reference Book never explains where the pelt came from, and fans have argued about it for 25 years.
  • Blue Blaster is a Fire-flavoured attack on a Digimon whose entire Mega line is ice-themed. MetalGarurumon’s missiles freeze, Omnimon’s cannon freezes, but the Rookie breathes flame.
  • The opening song of Digimon Adventure, the “butter-fly song” by Koji Wada, features Gabumon and Garurumon in the animation, and the evolution theme Brave Heart plays over nearly every Garurumon evolution in the 1999 series.
  • In the Digimon World games Gabumon is one of the few Rookies that can be raised to Numemon or Sukamon through bad care, a running joke since 1999 for players who let their lovingly chosen starter get sick.
  • Kirk Thornton, Gabumon’s English voice, also voiced Gabumon’s Megas’ counterparts in several projects, giving the English line a consistent sound from Rookie through Omnimon.

FAQ

What level and attribute is Gabumon?

Gabumon is a Rookie (Child in Japanese terms), Data-attribute Reptile Digimon in the official Reference Book, the anime and the games. The black variant, BlackGabumon, is Rookie and Virus. In the Digimon Card Game, Gabumon is a Level 3 blue card with the Data attribute.

What does Gabumon digivolve into?

In Digimon Adventure the line is Tsunomon, Gabumon, Garurumon, WereGarurumon, MetalGarurumon, and MetalGarurumon fuses with WarGreymon into Omnimon. In Last Evolution Kizuna it also reaches Gabumon Bond of Friendship directly. The Digimon Story games keep Garurumon as the main Champion but add branches, and requirements depend on level, stats and ABI in your specific version.

Is Gabumon a wolf or a reptile?

A reptile. The wolf look comes entirely from the Garurumon pelt it wears. The Reference Book and Digimon Adventure episode 9, where it removes the fur to keep Matt warm, both show the scaled body underneath.

What is BlackGabumon?

BlackGabumon, shown in game menus as Gabumon (Black), is a Virus-attribute version with a black pelt. It evolves into BlackGarurumon, ShadowWereGarurumon and BlackMetalGarurumon in the games and has never been an anime partner.

Who is Gabumon’s partner?

Matt Ishida, called Yamato Ishida in Japan, in Digimon Adventure, Adventure 02, tri., Last Evolution Kizuna and the 2020 reboot. Matt holds the Crest of Friendship, which is why Gabumon’s evolutions almost always trigger when Matt acts for someone else.

What are Gabumon’s attacks?

Blue Blaster (Petit Fire), a breath of blue flame, and Horn Attack (Little Horn), a charge with its horn. Blue Blaster is the one used in the anime and the special skill in the Digimon Story games.
