Mega level Digimon and how to reach them
Mega is the sixth and highest standard level in the English Digimon franchise, sitting above In-Training, Rookie, Champion and Ultimate, and it carries the Japanese name Ultimate (Kyūkyokutai). You reach it through normal digivolution, Warp Digivolution, DNA Digivolution, Biomerge or Spirit Evolution depending on the series, and every game sets its own level and stat gates. This guide walks you through what the level means, which Megas matter, and how to get there in the anime and the main games.
What Mega means and why Japan calls it Ultimate
The naming gap is the first thing you need to straighten out, because it trips up new Tamers constantly. In Japan the six core stages are Baby I, Baby II, Child, Adult, Perfect and Ultimate. The English dub of Digimon Adventure renamed them In-Training, Rookie, Champion, Ultimate and Mega, which means the English “Ultimate” is the Japanese “Perfect” and the English “Mega” is the Japanese “Ultimate”.
Wikimon and other Japanese-leaning databases file WarGreymon under “Ultimate” for exactly this reason. Fandom’s DigimonWiki and Bandai’s English game localisations use “Mega”. Both are correct, they just describe the same stage in two languages, and you should check which convention a source follows before you compare evolution lines across sites.
| English level | Japanese level | Card game level | Typical example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fresh | Baby I | Lv.2 (Digi-Egg) | Botamon |
| In-Training | Baby II | Lv.2 (Digi-Egg) | Koromon |
| Rookie | Child | Lv.3 | Agumon |
| Champion | Adult | Lv.4 | Greymon |
| Ultimate | Perfect | Lv.5 | MetalGreymon |
| Mega | Ultimate | Lv.6 | WarGreymon |
| No official level | Super Ultimate (fan/game usage) | Lv.7 | Omnimon (Omegamon) |
Bandai’s Digimon Reference Book, the official encyclopedia that assigns levels, types and attributes, has never created a stage above Ultimate (Mega). Omnimon is listed there as a Mega with the type Holy Knight. The “Ultra” and “Super Ultimate” labels you see in Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth, the card game’s Level 7 slot and countless Reddit debates are game mechanics and fan shorthand, not reference book canon.
Mega Digimon also carry the same attribute system as every other level: Vaccine, Data, Virus or Free, with a few oddities filed as Unknown or Variable. Attributes matter in the games because they form a triangle (Vaccine beats Virus, Virus beats Data, Data beats Vaccine), and they matter in the lore because Virus-attribute Megas such as Gallantmon (Dukemon) are proof that attribute says nothing about morality.
How Adventure introduced the Mega level
Digimon Adventure (1999) held the Mega level back for most of its first half. The kids pushed to Ultimate during the Etemon and Myotismon arcs, and the first Mega the audience saw in a fight was VenomMyotismon, the monstrous form the vampire took after his defeat in the real world. The DigiDestined answered it with the two Warp Digivolutions that cap the Myotismon arc, Agumon to WarGreymon and Gabumon to MetalGarurumon.
WarGreymon is the template every later hero Mega was measured against. His Brave Shield carries the Crest of Courage, his Dramon Destroyers are built to kill dragon types, and his Terra Force attack gathers the surrounding energy into a single sphere. He went on to headline Our War Game (2000) alongside MetalGarurumon, where the two merged into Omnimon, the first time the franchise showed something beyond Mega.
The Dark Masters arc then flooded the screen with villain Megas. MetalSeadramon (Data, Sea Animal), Puppetmon (Virus, Puppet), Machinedramon (Virus, Machine) and Piedmon (Virus, Demon Man) each controlled a region of Spiral Mountain, and the show used them to teach a lesson that still holds in every game: two Megas are not equal just because they share a level. Piedmon dismantled WarGreymon and MetalGarurumon until the full team arrived.
Five ways Digimon reach Mega in the anime
The anime is where the methods were defined, and each series added a route of its own. The games borrow from this list constantly, so learning the five paths tells you most of what you need about “digimon evolution” at the top end of the ladder.
1. Standard digivolution from Ultimate
The default path is simply the next rung. MetalGreymon becomes WarGreymon, Angewomon becomes Magnadramon (Holydramon) or Ophanimon, Paildramon becomes Imperialdramon. In Digimon Adventure 02 (2000) this is how Imperialdramon appeared: Paildramon, already a DNA Digimon at Ultimate, digivolved normally into Imperialdramon Dragon Mode, then Mode Changed to Fighter Mode.
Digimon Data Squad (Digimon Savers, 2006) used the standard chain for all four partners. RizeGreymon to ShineGreymon, MachGaogamon to MirageGaogamon, Lilamon to Rosemon and Crowmon (Yatagaramon) to Ravemon were all triggered by the DATS members’ DNA Charge pushed through the Digivice iC, and the show then layered Burst Mode on top as a power-up rather than a new level.
2. Warp Digivolution
Warp Digivolution skips Champion and Ultimate entirely. Agumon warp digivolved straight to WarGreymon, and Gabumon straight to MetalGarurumon, powered by the Crests of Courage and Friendship. Adventure used it for the two lead partners only, which is why the other six Megas of the original team did not appear on screen until the Digimon Adventure tri. films (2015 to 2018).
How Agumon reaches WarGreymon in Digimon Adventure
- Agumon is at Rookie with Tai holding the Digivice and the Crest of Courage.
- The Crest activates in a moment of genuine courage, not recklessness.
- Agumon calls Warp Digivolution and bypasses Greymon and MetalGreymon.
- WarGreymon appears at Mega and can later merge with MetalGarurumon into Omnimon.
Digimon Adventure: (2020), the reboot, treated Warp Digivolution as routine and even opened with Omnimon in its second episode, a choice that tells you how much the level’s prestige had shifted in twenty years.
3. DNA Digivolution (Jogress)
DNA Digivolution fuses two Digimon into one. In Adventure 02 the fusions produced Ultimates (Paildramon, Silphymon, Shakkoumon), but the method also built the single most famous above-Mega form in the franchise when WarGreymon and MetalGarurumon combined into Omnimon in Our War Game. Imperialdramon Paladin Mode in Revenge of Diaboromon followed the same logic, with Omnimon’s power transferred into Imperialdramon Fighter Mode.
Games lean on this route heavily. Digimon World 2 built its whole roster around DNA Digivolution, and the Digimon Story series from Cyber Sleuth onward reserves most Ultra-tier forms for it.
4. Biomerge (Matrix Evolution)
Digimon Tamers (2001) made the human part of the Mega. When Takato merged with WarGrowlmon he became Gallantmon, Henry and Rapidmon became MegaGargomon (SaintGalgomon), Rika and Taomon became Sakuyamon, and Ryo and Cyberdramon became Justimon. Impmon reached Beelzemon (Beelzebumon) separately, through a dark gift from the Deva lord Zhuqiaomon rather than a partner.
Biomerge Megas are the reason Tamers’ endgame feels different from Adventure’s. The Tamer is inside the body, so every hit lands on a person, and the show pays that off when Gallantmon reaches Crimson Mode against the D-Reaper.
5. Spirit Evolution and the Hybrid level
Digimon Frontier (2002) dropped partners entirely. The children became Digimon through Spirits, and the resulting forms are classed as Hybrid level in the reference book: Human Spirit, Beast Spirit, Fusion (Agunimon to BurningGreymon to Aldamon) and Unified (EmperorGreymon, MagnaGarurumon). Susanoomon, formed from all ten Spirits, is also filed as Hybrid.
Games have to place Hybrids somewhere, and they disagree. Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth Hacker’s Memory slots the Spirits into the normal ladder and parks Susanoomon at Ultra, while the card game prints EmperorGreymon as a Level 6 and treats him like any other Mega. Treat Hybrid as “Mega-strength, no official level” and you will not go far wrong.
Mega Digimon list: every main partner Mega by series
The table below covers the Megas reached by the main partner Digimon in each television series. Villain and side-character Megas are listed afterwards. Where a form only appeared in a film or a later movie series, the medium is named, because that is the kind of detail a “digimon evolution chart” has to get right.

Digimon Fusion (Xros Wars, 2010) is missing on purpose. That series abandoned levels altogether and built its power scale on DigiXros combinations such as Shoutmon X7, so there is no Mega to list.
The villain side of the ledger is just as deep. Adventure gave you VenomMyotismon, the four Dark Masters and, in 02, BlackWarGreymon, MaloMyotismon and Daemon. Our War Game added Diaboromon, whose attribute the reference book leaves as Unknown. Tamers supplied Megidramon, the Virus dragon Guilmon became when Takato’s rage corrupted a Biomerge, and Beelzemon before his redemption. Frontier closed with Lucemon’s higher modes and two Royal Knights, Dynasmon and Crusadermon (LordKnightmon).
Famous Megas by type: holy knights, demon lords and dragons
Megas cluster into named groups in the lore, and knowing them helps you read a roster quickly. The two groups that come up most are the Royal Knights and the Seven Great Demon Lords.
| Group | Members | Shared trait |
|---|---|---|
| Royal Knights | Omnimon, Alphamon, Gallantmon, Magnamon, Dynasmon, Crusadermon, UlforceVeedramon, Craniamon, Leopardmon (Duftmon), Sleipmon (Kentaurosmon), Examon, Gankoomon, Jesmon | Holy Knight type, 13 members, guardians of the Digital World |
| Seven Great Demon Lords | Lucemon, Leviamon, Daemon, Belphemon, Barbamon, Beelzemon, Lilithmon | Demon Lord type, each tied to one of the seven deadly sins |
| Dark counterparts | BlackWarGreymon, BlackMetalGarurumon, Omnimon Zwart | Virus recolours of hero Megas with matching attacks |
| Great dragons | Imperialdramon, Megidramon, Examon, Goldramon | Dragon-type Megas with strong presence in games and the card game |
Two points of order. Magnamon is an Armor-level Digimon who holds a Royal Knight seat, which is why you will see him printed as a Level 6 in the card game despite not being a textbook Mega. Lucemon’s base form is a Rookie, and he only reaches Mega strength as Lucemon Shadowlord Mode (Satan Mode), so the Demon Lords roster spans more than one level even though the group is described as a Mega council.
Holy and Dark are types, not attributes, and the distinction matters when you search a database. Seraphimon is a Seraph type with the Vaccine attribute; Lilithmon is a Demon Lord type with the Virus attribute; Gallantmon is a Holy Knight type with the Virus attribute. Type tells you what the Digimon is, attribute tells you how it interacts with the battle triangle.
Beyond Mega: Ultra, Super Ultimate and Mode Changes
Nothing above Mega is official in the reference book, but three mechanisms push past it in practice. You should separate them because games treat them differently.
Omnimon (Omegamon) is the poster child. He is listed as a Mega by Bandai, yet Cyber Sleuth, Hacker’s Memory and Digimon Story Time Stranger all file him under a seventh level called Ultra, and the Digimon Card Game prints him at Level 7. The Japanese term Chō Kyūkyokutai, usually translated Super Ultimate, shows up in some game material for exactly these fusions, and fans use “Ultra” interchangeably.
Mode Changes are the second mechanism. Imperialdramon Fighter Mode, Gallantmon Crimson Mode, Beelzemon Blast Mode and the Data Squad Burst Modes are stronger versions of a Mega that keep the base name. The reference book still lists most of them at Mega level; the games often bump them to Ultra.
The third is the Bond forms from Digimon Adventure: Last Evolution Kizuna (2020). Agumon Bond of Bravery and Gabumon Bond of Friendship were deliberately left without a level in the film’s material, and the card game later printed them at Level 6. Treat them as Mega-equivalent unless a specific game says otherwise.
How to reach Mega in the main games
Game requirements differ wildly, so you always need the title and version in front of you before you trust a chart. Here is how the biggest entries handle the level.
Digimon World (PlayStation, 1999)
The original Digimon World was stingy with Megas. Most lines ended at Ultimate, and only a handful of Megas were reachable through near-perfect care and high stats. The Metal Banana that turns a qualifying Digimon into MetalEtemon exists in the game’s data, but it was never obtainable in normal play: it was handed out only as a Japan-exclusive promotional item to 50 participants through a special memory card, and otherwise needs a cheat device such as a GameShark, so MetalEtemon was effectively out of reach for ordinary players. Because the game tracks care mistakes, weight, battles and stats, a single bad day could knock you off a Mega route. The later Digimon World: Next Order (2017) kept the care-raising structure but opened the Mega tier up to the whole roster, with level, stat and bond requirements shown on the status screen.
Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth and Hacker’s Memory
Cyber Sleuth (PS Vita 2015 in Japan, PS4 and Vita 2016 in the West, Complete Edition on Switch and PC 2019) is where modern Mega hunting was defined. The ladder runs Training I, Training II, Rookie, Champion, Ultimate, Mega, Ultra. Each digivolution checks the Digimon’s level, specific stats, and often the ABI stat, which only rises when you de-digivolve and re-raise a Digimon. Megas generally demand a level in the 50s plus stat gates, and Ultras demand both an ABI floor and a second named Digimon for DNA Digivolution.
How to get Omnimon in Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth
- Raise one Agumon line to WarGreymon and one Gabumon line to MetalGarurumon.
- Push both Megas to the level, stat and ABI thresholds shown on the Digivolve screen.
- De-digivolve and re-raise either partner if ABI is short, since ABI only grows that way.
- Select DNA Digivolution with WarGreymon and MetalGarurumon in your party to form Omnimon.
Tamer tip
De-digivolve your Mega as soon as it qualifies, re-raise it and repeat. Every pass adds ABI and lets the Digimon carry more learned skills, which is the difference between a Mega that is merely unlocked and one that wins at endgame.
Hacker’s Memory (2017 in Japan, 2018 in the West) runs on the same engine and extends the roster, so the Omnimon method above is unchanged there.
Digimon Story Time Stranger
Digimon Story Time Stranger launched on 3 October 2025 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, with the largest roster the Story series has had. It keeps the Cyber Sleuth structure: seven levels topped by Ultra, level plus stat gates for each step, de-digivolution to reroute a line, and DNA Digivolution for the fusion forms. The evolution screen lists every condition in plain view, so you never have to guess which stat is short.
If you want the Agumon line specifically, the dedicated walkthrough on how to “evolve agumon digimon story” lays out the route to WarGreymon and Omnimon step by step. Some post-launch Digimon arrive through the season pass, so check the “time stranger dlc content” breakdown before assuming a Mega is in the base game.
Digimon Card Game
The Digimon Card Game (2020 onward) expresses Mega as Level 6. A Level 6 card digivolves from a Level 5 on your field, pays a digivolution cost that is lower than hard-casting it from hand, and inherits the effects of the cards beneath it. Level 7 cards such as Omnimon and Imperialdramon Paladin Mode typically require a specific Level 6 underneath, mirroring the anime’s DNA logic. If you want the rules in full, the “digimon tcg” primer explains the evolution stack and memory system.
| Game | Level names above Rookie | Mega requirements | Above Mega |
|---|---|---|---|
| Digimon World (1999) | Champion, Ultimate, Mega | Care quality and stats on a few lines | None |
| Digimon World: Next Order (2017) | Champion, Ultimate, Mega | Level, stats, care and bond conditions | None |
| Cyber Sleuth / Hacker’s Memory | Champion, Ultimate, Mega, Ultra | Level, stat gates, often ABI | Ultra via DNA Digivolution |
| Time Stranger (2025) | Champion, Ultimate, Mega, Ultra | Level, stat gates, ABI, de-digivolve routes | Ultra via DNA Digivolution |
| Digimon Card Game | Lv.4, Lv.5, Lv.6, Lv.7 | Lv.5 on field, pay digivolution cost | Lv.7 cards |
Why the Mega level matters to the franchise
Mega is the level that sells the “digimon toy” lines, anchors every anime finale and defines the endgame of every RPG, so the stage carries weight beyond a stat sheet. The original Digivice virtual pets could not produce Megas at all; later devices such as the D-3, D-Ark and Vital Bracelet made the level a standard goal, and understanding how a “digivice works” explains why Warp Digivolution needed a Crest while Biomerge needed a Tamer.
The level has also become the main way the “digimon franchise owner“, Bandai Namco, keeps older lines alive. New Megas for Adventure-era partners arrived through tri., Kizuna and the 2020 reboot, and Ghost Game gave its three partners full Rookie-to-Mega lines inside a single series, something the original Adventure never managed for six of its eight kids.
FAQ
Is Mega the same as Ultimate in Digimon?
In English, no: Ultimate is the fifth level and Mega is the sixth. In Japanese the sixth level is called Ultimate (Kyūkyokutai) and the fifth is Perfect. English Mega and Japanese Ultimate are the same stage, and the confusion comes entirely from the dub’s renaming.
Is there a level above Mega?
Not in Bandai’s official Digimon Reference Book, which lists Omnimon as a Mega. Cyber Sleuth, Hacker’s Memory and Time Stranger add an Ultra level for fusions such as Omnimon and Imperialdramon Paladin Mode, and the card game prints them as Level 7. Fans call this tier Ultra or Super Ultimate.
What was the first Mega Digimon in the anime?
VenomMyotismon was the first Mega to fight on screen in Digimon Adventure, and WarGreymon and MetalGarurumon were the first hero Megas, both reached through Warp Digivolution at the end of the Myotismon arc.
Can every Digimon reach Mega?
In the anime, no; Adventure only took two of eight partners to Mega within the series itself. In the modern Story games, almost every line can reach at least one Mega, provided you meet the level, stat and ABI conditions shown on the digivolution screen.
Are Hybrid Digimon from Frontier Megas?
Officially they are Hybrid level with no equivalence stated. Games place them by strength: Cyber Sleuth Hacker’s Memory spreads the Spirits across the ladder with Susanoomon at Ultra, and the card game prints EmperorGreymon and MagnaGarurumon as Level 6, the Mega slot.
What is the easiest Mega to get in Digimon Story Time Stranger?
The straight lines from the starter partners, such as Agumon through Greymon and MetalGreymon to WarGreymon, have the fewest branching conditions. Expect level and stat gates on the final step and plan one de-digivolution cycle to build ABI for the Ultra fusions afterwards.
