Mutant type Digimon explained
Mutant type (突然変異型, “sudden mutation type” in Japanese) is the Digimon Reference Book category for monsters whose data mutated into something that fits no other family: Sukamon, Mamemon, Starmon and their relatives. It has nothing to do with Marvel’s Alpha and Omega level mutants, which is where a lot of the confusion online comes from. Here is what the type actually means, which Digimon carry it, and how they behave in the anime, the games and the card game.
What “Mutant type” means in Digimon

Every Digimon in the official Reference Book gets three labels: a level, an attribute and a type. The type describes its biological family, so Greymon is a Dinosaur type and Angemon is an Angel type. Mutant is the family for Digimon that have no family. Their data went wrong somewhere, or mutated in a way nobody can trace back to a normal origin, and the result is a creature that looks like a star, a pile of junk or a bean with a face.
I find it helps to think of Mutant as “glitch children of the Net”. The profiles back that up. Sukamon’s entry says it was born from the mutation of garbage data. Mamemon’s entry stresses that its true identity is unknown despite its Ultimate level power. Starmon’s whole personality is an obsession with stars and American pop culture that came from nowhere in particular. None of them share an ancestor. The type is a bucket for one-offs.
Two things trip people up. First, Mutant is not a level, and it is not rare in the gameplay sense. Mamemon is a common Ultimate in most Digimon Story games. Second, the attribute is independent of the type: Mutant Digimon can be Vaccine, Data, Virus or Free, and the ones I list below cover three of those four.
Every Mutant type Digimon I can confirm
These are the Mutant type Digimon whose Reference Book entries I am confident about. If a Digimon you expected is missing, it probably belongs to a neighbouring type like Undead (Raremon) or Mollusk (Numemon), which I cover further down.
| Digimon (Japanese name) | Level | Attribute | Debut medium |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chuumon | Rookie | Virus | Digimon Adventure (1999) |
| Mushroomon (Mushmon) | Rookie | Virus | Digimon Pendulum virtual pet |
| Sukamon (Scumon) | Champion | Virus | Digimon virtual pet |
| PlatinumSukamon (PlatinumScumon) | Champion | Virus | Digimon World games |
| Starmon | Champion | Data | Digimon virtual pet |
| Mamemon | Ultimate | Data | Digimon virtual pet |
| BigMamemon | Ultimate | Data | Digimon virtual pet |
| SuperStarmon | Ultimate | Data | Digimon Pendulum |
| Deramon | Ultimate | Data | Digimon Adventure 02 (2000) |
| PrinceMamemon | Mega | Data | Digimon virtual pet |
| Argomon (Algomon), evolved forms | Rookie to Mega | Free | Digimon Savers 3D (2009) |
Argomon deserves its own note. Its whole line shares one name across levels, and the Reference Book files the evolved forms as Mutant type with the Free attribute. The 2020 Digimon Adventure reboot made Argomon the first big threat the kids face, and the show calls it out as a mutation that spread through the network, which is the purest version of what the type is supposed to represent.
That file is Mamemon, the poster child for the type. A bean-sized body with Ultimate level firepower, iron gloves and a face that never stops grinning. The Reference Book is explicit that nobody knows what it mutated from, which is exactly why it sits in this category.
The three families inside the Mutant type

Most Mutant Digimon cluster into small groups. The lines below are what the official sources confirm, and I have noted the medium because the games disagree with each other.
| Family | Members | Confirmed links (medium) |
|---|---|---|
| Mamemon | Mamemon, BigMamemon, PrinceMamemon (plus MetalMamemon, which is Cyborg type) | Mamemon and BigMamemon both digivolve to PrinceMamemon in Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth |
| Sukamon | Chuumon, Sukamon, PlatinumSukamon | Sukamon digivolves to Etemon in Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth; Chuumon rides on Sukamon in Digimon Adventure but is a partner, not a pre-evolution, in the anime |
| Starmon | Starmon, SuperStarmon | SuperStarmon is Starmon’s direct Ultimate form in the Reference Book profile |
The Mamemon family is the most useful one to learn. MetalMamemon gets reclassified as a Cyborg type because of its mechanical body, so a “digimon evolution chart” that groups all four Mamemon together is showing you a design family rather than a type family. PrinceMamemon is the only Mutant Mega I can confirm, and in Cyber Sleuth it is one of the easier Megas to reach because two separate Ultimates feed into it.
Tamer tip
In Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth, Mamemon and BigMamemon both lead to PrinceMamemon, so do not waste time hunting the rarer BigMamemon if you already have the small one. Check PrinceMamemon’s stat requirements on the digivolution screen and raise whichever Ultimate you own.
Signature attacks
Attack names come from the Reference Book and the English anime where it differs. I only list the ones I can vouch for.
| Digimon | Attack | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Chuumon | Cheese Bomb | Throws explosive cheese, mostly for laughs |
| Mushroomon | Fungus Crusher | Scatters poisonous spore bombs |
| Mushroomon | Laughing Smasher | Spores that force the target to laugh uncontrollably |
| Starmon | Meteor Shower | Calls down a rain of small meteors |
| Mamemon | Smiley Bomb | Hurls a grinning bomb with its iron glove |
| BigMamemon | Big Smiley Bomb | Same idea, bigger blast |
| PrinceMamemon | Smiley Warhead | A missile sized version of the family move |
| Deramon | Royal Nuts | Launches nuts from the bush growing on its back |
Notice how many of these are either jokes or projectiles. Mutant type does not come with a shared elemental identity the way Flame or Aquatic types do. In the games that means you need to check each Digimon’s attack list individually instead of assuming a type bonus.
Mutant type in Digimon World (PS1)
The original Digimon World is where most players first met a Mutant type, usually against their will. Sukamon is one of the game’s two “punishment” evolutions, the other being Numemon. Let your partner relieve itself on the ground instead of using a toilet and the virus gauge fills. Max it out and your Rookie turns into Sukamon no matter what stats it had.
How to get Sukamon in Digimon World (PS1)
- Raise any Rookie level partner.
- Ignore the toilet icon when it appears and let the Digimon go on the ground.
- Repeat until the virus gauge on the status screen fills completely.
- The partner digivolves into Sukamon on the spot.
Why would anyone do this deliberately? Completionists want every entry, and Sukamon is a required stop for a full roster. Beyond that it is a lesson in the game’s care system: the same mechanic that produces Sukamon also underpins “digimon evolution” in that game generally, because care mistakes decide which Champion you reach.
Mutant type in the card game
In the Digimon Card Game the printed type trait matters, and Mutant shows up on the Mamemon and Argomon cards. The practical effect is small but real: any card effect that reads “Mutant type” or names Mamemon can support those specific lines. If you are building around them, read the trait line on each card rather than assuming, because MetalMamemon prints Cyborg, not Mutant, exactly like the Reference Book. My article on the “digimon tcg” covers how traits interact with evolution sources if you want the mechanical side.
Types people confuse with Mutant
A lot of “weird” Digimon get called mutants by fans when the official files say otherwise. This table clears up the usual mix-ups.
| Digimon | Actual type | Why people assume Mutant |
|---|---|---|
| Numemon | Mollusk | Sukamon’s partner in crime in Digimon World |
| Raremon | Undead | Looks like living sludge |
| Vademon | Alien | Brain in a jar with tentacles |
| Deltamon | Composite | Three heads stitched from different Digimon |
| Nanimon | Invader | A face with arms and legs, no obvious origin |
| Keramon | Unidentified | Mutated from a single virus in the Adventure movie |
Keramon is the closest cousin. Its profile describes a mutation, yet the Reference Book files the Diaboromon line as Unidentified type because it came from outside the Digital World entirely. That distinction, mutated inside the Net versus arriving from outside it, is the cleanest line between Mutant and Unidentified I have found.
Why the type matters to a Tamer
For most of the series the type is flavour. In Digimon Adventure, Sukamon and Chuumon are a comic duo and Chuumon gets one of the most surprisingly sad moments in the show when it jumps in front of a dagger Piedmon throws at Mimi. Starmon runs a Western town as sheriff in Adventure 02. Deramon pops up in the same series as a grumpy but harmless local. None of them need the label to work on screen.
In the games it starts to matter. Digimon Story titles use type as a sorting filter in the Field Guide, so knowing that Mamemon is Mutant while MetalMamemon is Cyborg saves scrolling. And in Digimon World the Mutant type is the stick the game uses to punish lazy care. That is the throughline I keep coming back to: Mutant Digimon are what the Digital World produces when something goes wrong, and the franchise has made that joke, that threat and that lesson for over 25 years.
FAQ
Is Mutant type the same as Mutant in Marvel or Magic: The Gathering?
No. Digimon uses the term for a biological family in its Reference Book. Marvel’s Alpha, Beta, Omega system ranks power and Magic uses Mutant as a creature subtype. The three share nothing but the word.
Are Mutant type Digimon weak?
Not as a rule. Mamemon and PrinceMamemon are strong for their levels across the Digimon Story games. Sukamon is weak in Digimon World because it is a punishment evolution, not because of its type.
Which attribute do Mutant type Digimon have?
It varies by Digimon. The Sukamon family and Mushroomon are Virus, the Mamemon and Starmon families are Data, and the Argomon line is Free according to the Digimon Reference Book.
Is Numemon a Mutant type?
No. Numemon is a Mollusk type in the Reference Book, even though it is paired with Sukamon as a care failure in Digimon World.
What is the only Mutant type Mega?
PrinceMamemon is the Mutant Mega I can confirm from official sources. Argomon’s Mega form is also filed as Mutant type, which gives the category two Megas if you count that line.
