Veemon

Veemon Digimon file

Veemon (V-mon) is a Free-attribute Rookie Digimon, best known as Davis Motomiya’s partner in Digimon Adventure 02 (2000). In the anime it Armor Digivolves into Flamedramon, Raidramon and Magnamon. Its regular line runs through ExVeemon and Paildramon to Imperialdramon.

Who is Veemon

Veemon is a small blue dragon with a yellow V on its forehead. It has a cream belly and a cheerful, scrappy attitude that fits its partners perfectly. Bandai’s lore describes the species as a rare descendant of the Digital World’s ancient Digimon. It looks like a lightweight Rookie but carries hidden power and the potential for explosive digivolution. That “ancient” tag matters in Digimon Adventure 02, where Veemon sleeps sealed under the Digi-Egg of Courage until the right kid lifts it.

Most fans meet Veemon through Davis, and the pairing is one of the most fun in the franchise. Both are loud, brave, a little reckless and fiercely loyal. The species started on paper, though. It first appeared in the V-Jump manga Digimon Adventure V-Tamer 01 as Zero, partner of that story’s Taichi Yagami. The Western name changed from V-mon to Veemon, which is why searches for “v mon” and “v-mon digimon” lead to the same blue dragon.

Veemon at a glance by medium

Detail Anime (Adventure 02) Digimon Story games Digimon Card Game
Level Rookie Rookie Lv.3 (Rookie)
Attribute Not stated on screen Free Free
Partner or role Davis Motomiya Recruitable party Digimon Playable Rookie card
Signature line Armor + ExVeemon + DNA ExVeemon, Paildramon, Imperialdramon Blue Veemon decks

The Free attribute is worth understanding if you play the games. In Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth, attributes follow a triangle: Vaccine beats Virus, Virus beats Data and Data beats Vaccine. Free sits outside that triangle as a neutral attribute. A Free Digimon never takes the double-damage weakness hit and never gets the bonus either. Veemon is a safe pick into unknown enemy teams, and you won’t need to rebuild your party around matchups.

Evolution line

This is where Veemon gets complicated, in the best way. Few Rookies have as many branches as this one. The anime gave it three Armor forms, a Champion form and a DNA line, and the manga added a separate dragon line. Every table below names its medium, because the routes are not the same from one to the next.

Anime: Digimon Adventure 02

Veemon’s anime line covers Armor Digivolution, a regular Champion form and DNA Digivolution with Wormmon’s line.

From To Level How it happens (anime)
DemiVeemon (Chibimon) Veemon In-Training to Rookie Standard digivolution
Veemon Flamedramon (Fladramon) Armor Digi-Egg of Courage
Veemon Raidramon (Lighdramon) Armor Digi-Egg of Friendship
Veemon Magnamon Armor Golden Digi-Egg of Miracles
Veemon ExVeemon (XV-mon) Champion Regular digivolution via the D-3
ExVeemon + Stingmon Paildramon Ultimate DNA Digivolution
Paildramon Imperialdramon Dragon Mode Mega Digivolution
Imperialdramon Dragon Mode Imperialdramon Fighter Mode Mega Mode change
Imperialdramon Fighter Mode Imperialdramon Paladin Mode Mega Mode change (Revenge of Diaboromon)

A few things stand out in that chart.

  • Armor Digivolution comes first. The Digimon Emperor’s Control Spires block normal digivolution early in 02, so the Digi-Eggs carry the team. Flamedramon is Veemon’s first transformation in the series.
  • Davis is the only kid with two standard Digi-Eggs. He holds both Courage and Friendship, inherited symbolically from Tai and Matt. That gives Veemon a fire form and a speed form to swap between.
  • Magnamon is the miracle card. The golden Digi-Egg of Miracles turns Veemon into Magnamon for a key showdown in the Digimon Emperor arc. Magnamon returns in the 2000 movie Digimon Hurricane Landing (part of Digimon: The Movie in English), where Wormmon also gets a golden Armor form.
  • DNA is the endgame. ExVeemon and Stingmon fuse into Paildramon, which pushes on to Imperialdramon. The bond between Davis and Ken drives the back half of the series, and their Digimon literally merge to show it.

If you want to see where this branch sits next to Agumon’s and Gabumon’s lines, our Digimon evolution chart lays the major lines out side by side.

Manga: Digimon Adventure V-Tamer 01

The manga version is a different beast. Zero, Taichi’s V-mon partner in V-Tamer 01, follows a dragon line instead of the Armor and DNA routes:

From To Level
V-mon V-dramon (Veedramon) Champion
V-dramon AeroV-dramon (AeroVeedramon) Ultimate

Veedramon is a Vaccine-attribute dragon in modern Digimon data, so the manga line doesn’t share Veemon’s Free attribute all the way up. That line eventually crowns with UlforceVeedramon, one of the Royal Knights. That’s why you often see Veemon listed next to Veedramon and UlforceVeedramon in game databases even though Davis never touched them.

Digimon Story games

The Digimon Story series treats Veemon as a recruitable Rookie that you raise through levels and stats. “digimon story cyber sleuth” and its follow-up Hacker’s Memory put the anime’s DNA line in reach of a single Veemon, with no Wormmon required.

From To Level (Cyber Sleuth) Condition type
DemiVeemon Veemon In-Training II to Rookie Level and stat thresholds
Veemon ExVeemon Rookie to Champion Level, stats, ABI/CAM where listed
ExVeemon Paildramon Champion to Ultimate Level, stats, ABI/CAM where listed
Paildramon Imperialdramon Dragon Mode Ultimate to Mega Level, stats, ABI/CAM where listed
Imperialdramon Dragon Mode Imperialdramon Fighter Mode Mega to Mega Level, stats, ABI/CAM where listed

How Cyber Sleuth conditions work: each digivolution screen lists the requirements. That’s a minimum level plus thresholds for stats such as Attack or Speed. Some routes also need ABI (the stat that carries over each time you de-digivolve) or CAM (Camaraderie, which rises as you use the Digimon). Digivolution is a two-way street. You can de-digivolve Veemon at any time, keep part of its stats, and push it down a different branch. That’s how veteran players build a stacked Imperialdramon.

Tamer tip

In Cyber Sleuth, bounce Veemon up and down its line a few times before chasing Imperialdramon. Every de-digivolution raises ABI, and a high-ABI Veemon clears later requirements easily while picking up extra skills on the way.

Veemon is also part of the roster in Digimon Story Time Stranger, the 2025 entry. Time Stranger reworks how requirements display and adds a personality system that shapes how your Digimon grow. The safest way to plan a route is the in-game evolution screen, which shows exact conditions for every branch. Our “time stranger digimon” list shows the full roster with pictures. The same planning logic from our guide on how to evolve Agumon in Digimon Story carries straight over to Veemon.

Digimon Card Game

The 2020 Digimon Card Game doesn’t use a fixed evolution tree. Digivolution is a rule on each card instead. Every Digimon card prints a level, a color and a digivolution cost. You place a card on top of a Digimon one level lower that matches the requirement printed on it.

Card game level Equivalent Veemon line example
Lv.2 (Digi-Egg) In-Training DemiVeemon
Lv.3 Rookie Veemon
Lv.4 Champion ExVeemon
Lv.5 Ultimate Paildramon
Lv.6 Mega Imperialdramon

Veemon is a Blue card in its core prints, matching the Blue decks built around ExVeemon and Imperialdramon. Rookie cards usually digivolve from a Lv.2 Digi-Egg for a low cost, which is how the game gets your field going on turn one. Bandai has printed Veemon across several booster sets over the years. Check the set code and card number in the bottom corner of the card before you trade or build. Two Veemon cards can do very different things, and stacking the wrong one is a classic beginner mistake.

Signature attacks

Veemon fights the way Davis thinks: head first. Here are its moves from the anime, with the Japanese names where they differ.

Attack (English dub) Japanese name What it does (anime)
Vee Headbutt V-mon Head A charging headbutt led by the V on its forehead
Boom Boom Punch Boom Boom Punch A flurry of windmilling punches

Those two moves are classic Rookie fare, scrappy and close range. The flashier stuff belongs to its evolved forms. The moves below are the ones fans remember most from 02.

Form Signature attack (English dub) Medium
ExVeemon Vee Laser Anime
Flamedramon Fire Rocket Anime
Raidramon Blue Thunder Anime
Magnamon Magna Blast Anime
Paildramon Desperado Blaster Anime
Imperialdramon Fighter Mode Positron Laser Anime

ExVeemon’s Vee Laser deserves a special mention. It fires an X-shaped beam from its chest, which is why the Japanese name is X-Laser. The X shape on ExVeemon’s body lines up with the attack. That’s a neat bit of design work you only notice once you know the Japanese name.

The games rename and rebalance moves constantly. In Cyber Sleuth and Time Stranger, Veemon’s signature skill appears in its skill list on the status screen, and the inherited skills you collect while digivolving matter more for your build than the signature itself.

Appearances

Veemon has stayed busy for more than 25 years. Here’s where you can find it across manga, anime, film, games and cards.

Anime series and movies

Title Year Veemon’s role
Digimon Adventure 02 2000–2001 (50 episodes) Main partner of Davis Motomiya
Digimon Hurricane Landing / Digimon: The Movie 2000 Digivolves to Magnamon with the golden Digi-Egg
Digimon Adventure 02: Revenge of Diaboromon 2001 Imperialdramon reaches Paladin Mode
Digimon Xros Wars: The Young Hunters Who Leapt Through Time 2012 Cameo with Davis in the finale’s gathering of past heroes
Digimon Adventure tri. 2015–2018 The 02 team appears only briefly
Digimon Adventure 02: The Beginning 2023 Davis and Veemon headline the film

Adventure 02 is the core text. Veemon is the newcomer of the 02 team. Patamon and Gatomon carry over from Digimon Adventure, while Armadillomon, Hawkmon and Veemon join with the Digi-Eggs. Veemon spends a lot of the series as DemiVeemon, riding around in Davis’s arms or bag in the human world. Its running crush on Gatomon is one of the show’s best comic threads.

Hurricane Landing is the movie most Western fans saw first, folded into Digimon: The Movie in 2000. The golden Digi-Eggs give Veemon its Magnamon moment on the big screen. Revenge of Diaboromon gives Imperialdramon its biggest flex. It borrows Omnimon’s power to unlock Paladin Mode.

Fans of the 02 kids spent years frustrated that tri. sidelined them. The Beginning finally gave Davis and Veemon a story of their own, and it digs into their partnership more than any prior entry.

Veemon’s voice has stayed consistent. Junko Noda voices it in Japanese, and Derek Stephen Prince handles the English dub, where he also voices Ken Ichijouji.

Games

Veemon has appeared in a long list of games. These are the standouts:

Game Platform Year Role
Digimon Rumble Arena PlayStation 2001 Playable fighter
Digimon World 3 PlayStation 2002 Starting partner option
Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth PS Vita, PS4 2015 (JP), 2016 (West) Recruitable Rookie
Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth: Hacker’s Memory PS Vita, PS4 2017 (JP), 2018 (West) Recruitable Rookie
Digimon All-Star Rumble PS3, Xbox 360 2014 Playable fighter
Digimon Story Time Stranger PS5, Xbox Series, PC 2025 Recruitable Rookie

Digimon World 3 is a big one for search traffic, and for good reason. When you start a new game, you choose your opening Digimon from fixed starter sets. Veemon is one of the Rookies on offer, alongside franchise faces like Guilmon and Renamon. You don’t hunt Veemon down in the field. You take it on day one from the starter selection. This makes it one of the easiest ways to get a long-term Veemon in an older game, because it levels with you from the opening hour.

How to get Veemon in Digimon World 3

  1. Start a new game and go through the opening scenes.
  2. Reach the partner selection screen.
  3. Pick the starter set that includes Veemon.
  4. Confirm, and Veemon joins your team from the first battle.

In Digimon Rumble Arena, Veemon is a fan favorite for fast, aggressive play. All-Star Rumble brought it back for a newer generation.

The Digimon Story series is where Veemon really shines for collectors. Its route to Imperialdramon makes it a popular “raise from scratch” project. You get a full DNA payoff without needing a second Digimon, which the anime never allowed. Our overview of “digimon story time stranger” covers how the newest game handles raising and recruiting overall.

Digimon Card Game sets

Veemon has been a recurring card since the 2020 relaunch of the Digimon Card Game. It shows up across multiple booster sets and promos as a Blue Lv.3 Rookie. Its evolved forms anchor some of the game’s most recognizable Blue decks. Card numbers and effects vary between prints, so build from the specific card in front of you. Don’t assume every “Veemon” does the same thing.

Trivia

  • Manga before anime. Veemon’s real debut is Digimon Adventure V-Tamer 01 (1998) in V-Jump, where it’s Zero, partner of the manga’s Taichi. That’s two years before Adventure 02 brought it to TV.
  • The V matters. The V on Veemon’s forehead ties the species to its V-Jump roots and to its “V-mon” name, and it carries through the V-dramon line.
  • Two dragon families, one Rookie. Veemon sits at the root of two separate trees. One is the anime’s ExVeemon-to-Imperialdramon line. The other is the manga’s Veedramon line up to UlforceVeedramon. Few Rookies split this cleanly between media.
  • Free all the way up the anime line. Veemon is Free, and the 02 forms that matter most share that neutral attribute in modern data. That makes the line low-risk in attribute-based games.
  • Inherited crests, inherited Digi-Eggs. Davis receives the Digi-Eggs of Courage and Friendship, echoing Tai’s and Matt’s Crests from “digimon adventure”. Flamedramon reads as a nod to Tai’s fire, and Raidramon to Matt’s cool-headed speed.
  • The golden exception. Magnamon comes from the Digi-Egg of Miracles, not the Courage or Friendship eggs. It’s the only Armor form in 02 born from a Digi-Egg tied to a one-off event.
  • Shared voice. In the English dub, Derek Stephen Prince voices both Veemon and Ken Ichijouji. That means one actor voices both halves of the 02 DNA partnership.
  • Mega without a Mega Rookie. Imperialdramon is Veemon’s only Mega in the anime, and it requires another Digimon. Veemon can never reach Mega alone on TV, while the Digimon Story games let it do exactly that.

FAQ

What is Veemon’s Japanese name?

Veemon is called V-mon in Japan. The English dub spelled it Veemon to match the pronunciation. That’s why “v mon,” “v-mon” and “veemon digimon” all refer to the same Digimon.

Is Veemon Vaccine, Data, Virus or Free?

Veemon is Free in the Digimon Story games and the Digimon Card Game. Free is neutral in Cyber Sleuth’s attribute triangle, so it takes no weakness damage from Vaccine, Data or Virus. Its manga relative Veedramon is Vaccine, which causes some confusion.

What does Veemon digivolve into?

In the Digimon Adventure 02 anime, Veemon becomes Flamedramon, Raidramon or Magnamon through Armor Digivolution. Its Champion form is ExVeemon, which DNA Digivolves with Stingmon into Paildramon and then Imperialdramon. In the V-Tamer 01 manga, it follows the Veedramon line instead.

How do you get Veemon in Digimon World 3?

You pick Veemon at the start. It’s one of the Rookies in the starter sets offered when you begin a new game, alongside Guilmon and Renamon, so choose the set that includes it.

Who is Veemon’s partner?

In the anime, Veemon is Davis Motomiya’s partner in Digimon Adventure 02 and its films. In the V-Tamer 01 manga, a V-mon named Zero partners with that story’s Taichi Yagami.

Can Veemon reach Imperialdramon without Wormmon?

Not in the anime, where Paildramon needs ExVeemon and Stingmon to fuse. In “digimon story cyber sleuth”, one Veemon can digivolve through ExVeemon and Paildramon to Imperialdramon on its own once it meets the requirements on the evolution screen.
