Gekomon

Gekomon is the Champion-level frog Digimon with a brass horn growing out of its neck, best known as the loyal (and slightly dim) servant of ShogunGekomon in Digimon Adventure. This profile covers its evolution lines across the anime, the Digimon Story games and the card game, its Symphony Crusher attack, every notable appearance, and why “Gekkomon” from Digimon Beatbreak is a different Digimon entirely.
Who is Gekomon

Gekomon is a Virus-attribute Amphibian Digimon at the Champion level (Adult in Japanese materials). It evolves from the tadpole Digimon Otamamon and it has one defining feature you cannot miss: a horn, shaped like a brass instrument, grows straight out of its neck with the bell pointing forward. Everything about Gekomon revolves around sound. It attacks with sound waves blown through that horn, and the round holes dotting its body act like the tone holes on a wind instrument. The Japanese name comes from “geko,” the onomatopoeia for a frog’s croak, so the name literally means “Croakmon.”
Gekomon almost never shows up alone. In the anime it lives in a swampy castle in huge numbers alongside Otamamon, and the whole colony answers to ShogunGekomon, its Ultimate form, a mountain of a frog with two horns on its back. That hierarchy defines its personality: Gekomon are cheerful, musical, easily led and more interested in a good performance than a fight. That makes them perfect comic relief in the shows and, in the games, a solid mid-tier water and sound attacker that leads to a very strong Ultimate.
Evolution line
Gekomon’s core route is the same everywhere: Otamamon before it, ShogunGekomon after it. The branches change by medium, and the requirements only exist in the games, so each table below names where the data comes from.
Anime (Digimon Adventure)
The anime never shows a Gekomon digivolving on screen. What it shows is the relationship: Otamamon and Gekomon are the servants, ShogunGekomon is the master they spend 300 years trying to wake up. The line is implied by the official Digimon profiles rather than animated.
| From | Digimon | To | Shown in |
|---|---|---|---|
| Otamamon | Gekomon | ShogunGekomon | Digimon Adventure episode 25, “Princess Karaoke” (relationship only, no on-screen digivolution) |
Digimon Story games
The Digimon Story series is where you actually raise a Gekomon yourself. In Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth (and Hacker’s Memory) it sits in the water-and-sound corner of the roster and has three Ultimate exits. In Digimon Story Time Stranger it returns alongside Otamamon and ShogunGekomon with the usual level plus stat gate system. I am not listing exact level and stat numbers here because they differ per game and I could not verify them to the digit; the in-game Digivolution screen always shows you the precise thresholds for your copy.
| Game | Evolves from | Evolves to | How the gate works |
|---|---|---|---|
| Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth / Hacker’s Memory | Otamamon | ShogunGekomon, Whamon, MegaSeadramon | Level threshold plus minimum stat values checked on the Digivolution tab; ABI needed for the higher branches |
| Digimon Story Time Stranger | Otamamon | ShogunGekomon | Level threshold plus stat values shown in the Digivolution menu; personality and the conversion (scan) system also matter when you first obtain it |
How to get Gekomon in Digimon Story Time Stranger
- Scan Otamamon in the field until the conversion meter fills and convert it in the lab.
- Open Otamamon’s Digivolution tab and read Gekomon’s level and stat lines for your version.
- Train the lagging stat with farm training or battles until every line turns green.
- Digivolve, then keep levelling Gekomon toward ShogunGekomon.
Tamer tip
In Cyber Sleuth and Hacker’s Memory, De-Digivolving Gekomon back to Otamamon and climbing again raises its ABI and gives it a bigger stat pool. Do a couple of cycles before you push for ShogunGekomon and the Ultimate comes out noticeably sturdier.
Card game
Both of Bandai’s card games keep the Otamamon lineage intact. In the original Hyper Colosseum game Gekomon is an Adult-level card, and in the current Digimon Card Game it is a Level 4 Digimon that stacks on a Level 3 for the normal Champion cost, with ShogunGekomon available as the Level 5 on top.
| Card game | Evolves from | Evolves to | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Digimon Card Game (2020 onward) | Otamamon and other Level 3 Digimon that match its colour and cost | ShogunGekomon (Level 5) | Standard digivolution cost printed on the card; check the specific card for inherited effects |
| Hyper Colosseum (1999 onward) | Otamamon | ShogunGekomon | Adult-level card in the old Child/Adult/Perfect level system |
The Gekomon family at a glance
| Digimon | Level | Attribute | Type | Role in the line |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Otamamon | Rookie | Virus | Amphibian | Tadpole stage, servant class |
| Gekomon | Champion | Virus | Amphibian | Horn-blowing soldier of the swamp |
| ShogunGekomon | Ultimate | Virus | Amphibian | The lord of the castle, two horns, enormous body |
Signature attacks
Gekomon’s one iconic move is Symphony Crusher, known in Japan as Crash Symphony. It blows through the horn on its neck and fires a concentrated blast of sound waves at the target. The animation in Digimon Adventure makes the idea very clear: a dozen Gekomon line up like a brass section and let rip, and the sheer vibration knocks the DigiDestined off their feet. Sound is the whole concept of this Digimon, so its attack is a destructive chord rather than a punch or a bite.
In the Digimon Story games Symphony Crusher survives as its signature skill, scaling across the usual I, II and III tiers as it levels. Beyond that signature, Gekomon learns the generic water-leaning skill set its line is built around, which pairs well with the Whamon and MegaSeadramon branches in Cyber Sleuth. In the Digimon Adventure dub the Gekomon also use their long frog tongues to grab and shove, which is treated as a tactic rather than a named attack.
Appearances
Gekomon has been part of the franchise since the virtual pet era, so it turns up across almost every generation of media. This is the confirmed list, by medium.
Virtual pets
Gekomon debuted on the Digimon Pendulum 1.0 Nature Spirits, the October 1998 Pendulum that also introduced Otamamon and ShogunGekomon. On that device it sits at the Adult (Champion) stage of the Otamamon line. If you collect vintage hardware, that Pendulum is still the cheapest way to raise an original-era Gekomon, and it is the kind of digimon toy that keeps climbing in price because the Nature Spirits roster is so popular.
Anime
Digimon Adventure (1999), episode 25, “Princess Karaoke.” This is the Gekomon episode. Tai and Joe track Mimi to a castle in the swamp where hundreds of Gekomon and Otamamon are treating her like royalty. The deal is simple: ShogunGekomon fell asleep after losing a singing contest, centuries of songs have failed to wake him, and the servants believe only a voice as beautiful as the one that beat him will do. Mimi has that voice. Mimi gets a taste for the spoiled-princess life, refuses to sing, and the Gekomon lock her friends up when they push her. She eventually sings, ShogunGekomon wakes up furious and starts wrecking his own castle, and the DigiDestined have to put him back to sleep. Mimi’s Crest of Sincerity reacts when she apologises for how she treated everyone. The episode is a fan favourite because it is a character episode for Mimi first and a monster fight second.
Gekomon also returns in crowd scenes later in the series as the DigiDestined gather Digimon allies for the final arc, and the Gekomon and Otamamon of the swamp castle are referenced again when the kids revisit old friends. If you want to rewatch episode 25, the original Adventure is streaming in several regions, and our “digimon hulu” guide breaks down which platform carries which dub.
Games
Gekomon is a regular of the raising games in particular.

|---|---|---|
| Digimon World 2 (2000) | PlayStation | Raisable Champion, evolves from Otamamon and into ShogunGekomon |
| Digimon World DS (2006) | Nintendo DS | Raisable Champion in the Otamamon line |
| Digimon World Dawn and Dusk (2007) | Nintendo DS | Raisable Champion in the Otamamon line |

| Digimon Story Time Stranger (2025) | PS5, Xbox Series, PC | Raisable Champion in the Otamamon to ShogunGekomon line |
In Digimon Story Time Stranger you meet the whole family: Otamamon is one of the early water-type scans, Gekomon is the Champion payoff, and ShogunGekomon is the big Ultimate target. If you are hunting for a specific recruit, our “time stranger digimon” roster article lists every obtainable Digimon with pictures, and the full “digimon story time stranger” overview covers how the conversion and personality systems work.
Card game
Gekomon has cards in Bandai’s Hyper Colosseum game from the early 2000s and in the modern Digimon Card Game, where it functions as a Level 4 body in the Otamamon to ShogunGekomon stack. It also appears in the Digimon Digital Card Battle video game on PlayStation. I have not listed set codes here because I could not confirm every printing against a current card database, and this is a fandom where a wrong set number gets noticed fast.
Gekomon vs Gekkomon: the Digimon Beatbreak confusion

A lot of people typing “gekkomon” or “digimon beatbreak gekkomon” are not looking for the frog from 1998 at all. They want the partner Digimon from Digimon Beatbreak, the 2025 anime. That Digimon is called Gekkomon, with two k’s, and it is a brand-new design that belongs to the protagonist, Tomoro Kirishima. Despite the similar name it is not a redesign of the classic Gekomon and it does not share its evolution line.
The two are easy to tell apart. Classic Gekomon is a plump green frog with a horn on its neck and a big-band personality. Beatbreak’s Gekkomon is a sleeker, darker Rookie-level creature built for a show whose premise is Digimon born from and reacting to human feelings, so its whole concept is tied to emotion rather than to music. If you came here for the new series, the “digimon beatbreak” anime guide covers Gekkomon, the cast and the watch order in full.
Trivia
- The name is pure onomatopoeia. “Geko geko” is how Japanese frogs croak, the same way English frogs “ribbit.”
- Gekomon’s horn is drawn like a brass instrument with the bell facing forward, while ShogunGekomon’s two horns grow from its back. Three stages, and only the tadpole Otamamon has no horn at all.
- In “Princess Karaoke” the Gekomon have tried countless songs over the centuries to wake ShogunGekomon and every one has failed; they believe only a voice as beautiful as the one that beat him in a singing contest will do. Mimi’s is, which is why the episode’s title is a karaoke joke in both languages.
- The Nature Spirits Pendulum that debuted Gekomon came out two months before the Deep Savers Pendulum that debuted Gomamon’s partner line, yet Gekomon and Zudomon still tend to share game chapters and water-themed areas.
- In Cyber Sleuth, Gekomon can branch into Whamon and MegaSeadramon as well as ShogunGekomon, giving the little frog one of the more flexible Champion-to-Ultimate spreads among water Digimon.
- Gekomon are almost always drawn in groups. Official art of the swamp castle in Adventure shows dozens of them, and the games usually spawn them in packs, which fits a Digimon whose entire concept is playing in an orchestra.
